*POSITION SUMMARY: * Performs routine and advanced Respiratory Care procedures according to established standards in the Blood Gas Lab, Adult Critical Care Units, Pediatric/Neonatal Critical Care Units, Emergency Department and General Patient Care areas of West Virginia University Hospitals, Inc. Adheres to the established performance expectations for WVUH employees in the areas of People, Service, Performance Improvement, and Shared Values and Culture.

*MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:*

*EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:*

1.

If hired after July 1, 2022, must be Registered by West Virginia Board of Respiratory Care as a Registered Respiratory Therapist (LRTR)

OR

If hired prior to July 1, 2022, must be licensed by West Virginia Board of Respiratory Care as a Licensed Respiratory Therapist – Registered (LRTR) within one year of employment.

2.

Obtain certification in Basic Life Support within 30 days of hire date.

3.

*If assigned to Children’s Hospital Transport Team:* obtain air methods training and survival training certificates yearly.

*PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:*

*If assigned to Pulmonary Function Lab*: Certified Pulmonary Function Technologist (CPFT) by National Board for Respiratory Care preferred.

*CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: *The statements described here are intended to describe the general nature of work being performed by people assigned to this position. They are not intended to be constructed as an all-inclusive list of all responsibilities and duties. Other duties may be assigned.

1.

Performs basic and advanced therapeutic procedures for neonatal, pediatric, adult, and geriatric patients by order of the physician.

2.

Performs emergency and acute Respiratory Care procedures in accordance with departmental policies and procedures.

3.

Assembles, checks, and corrects malfunctions and performs quality controls on Respiratory Care equipment.

4.

Initiates, maintains, and discontinues mechanical ventilation for adult, pediatric, and neonatal patients.

5.

Performs and analyzes arterial blood gas samples adhering to standards of accrediting agencies (CAP, Joint Commission).

6.

Performs diagnostic procedures including bronchoscopies, pulse oximetry, and pH trend studies.

7.

Communicates appropriately and effectively with other members of the healthcare team regarding all aspects of patient care.

8.

Provides assistance with patient and family/caregiver education along with other members of the healthcare team.

9.

Actively participates in departmental quality assurance and hospital-wide organizational performance improvement activities.

10.

Maintains clinical and professional competency based upon established standards of practice.

11.

Maintains knowledge of current practices of WVUH, Inc. through annual review of all pertinent policy and procedure manuals (i.e., Administrative manual, Infection Control, Safety, Departmental), review of newsletters and other relevant publications, and attendance at departmental meetings.

12.

Demonstrates the ability to perform all relevant departmental competencies.

13.

Performs basic and advanced diagnostic procedures for pediatric, adult, and geriatric patients by order of the Physician

14.

*If assigned to Pulmonary Function Lab* (Pulmonary Function technologist are Respiratory Therapist (Registered) that are cross-trained in Respiratory Care and Pulmonary Function. They perform all functions listed above and the additional below):

· Performs Pulmonary procedures in accordance with departmental policies and procedures

· Assembles, checks, and corrects malfunctions and performs quality controls on Pulmonary/Respiratory Care equipment

· Yearly hearing test

· Weight: maintained at 220 pounds or less, weighed annually and random weight checks may be conducted

· Work requires strength and or stamina, lifting, moving, stopping, reaching, positioning, of patients, standing, walking, and carrying of patients, materials and equipment weighing 40+ pounds.
