As a MEDICAL CODER you will:
- Analyze medical information from medical records. Accurately codes diagnostic and procedural information in accordance with national coding guidelines and appropriate reimbursement requirements.
- Consult with medical providers to clarify missing or inadequate record information and to determine appropriate diagnostic and procedure codes.
- Abstract clinical diagnoses, procedure codes and document other pertinent information obtained from the medical record into the electronic medical records. Seeks out missing information and creates complete records.
- Refers inconsistent patient treatment information/documentation to the Director of Health Information Management or individual department for clarification/additional information for accurate code assignment.
- Provide quality assurance for medical records. For all assigned records and/or areas assures compliance with coding rules and regulations according to regulatory agencies for state Medicaid plans, Center for Medicare Services (CMS), Office of the Inspector General (OIG) and the Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA), as well as Story Medical and other applicable professional standards.
- Maintain strict confidentiality of patient, resident, and personnel information.

Required Education, Experience, and Skills:
- High school graduate or equivalent required.
- 1-2 years of experience in a healthcare setting.
- Ability to work effectively with common office software, coding software, and abstracting systems.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Adaptability to accepting responsibility for the direction, control, or planning of an activity.
- Ability to maintain a high standard of courtesy and cooperation in dealing with co-workers, patients, and visitors.
- Evidence of the practice of a high level of confidentiality.
- Skilled in oral and written communications.
- Must have legal authorization to work in the United States
Preferred Education, Experience, and Skills:
- Post-secondary degree in Health Information Technology or related health care field preferred.
- CPC or CCS certification preferred.
- Previous experience with medical coding in a hospital/clinic setting is preferred.

Additional Details:
Department: Health Information Management
Employment Type: Full-Time, 30 hours per week, Hybrid eligible
Schedule: 8:00am - 3:00pm, Monday through Friday
Salary Range: $17.65 - $26.48 per hour (competitive and commensurate with experience)
