Police OfficerThe job of a police officer is a sworn and state certified peace officer position assigned to University Police and Security Services. Police officers operate under the general direction of the Chief of Police/Director of University Police and Security Services. A police officer will provide a full range of law enforcement and security services. Police officers will enforce laws, respond to threats, investigate complaints and suspicious occurrences and incidents which may impact the University, maintain order, assist people, identify criminal activity, apprehend offenders, identify the source of problems in the community and work with the community to resolve issues. The police officer will support the department's mission by providing essential functions while respecting the rights and dignity of all individuals.Key job responsibilities include:Ensuring the safe and orderly flow of traffic on institutional roadways and enforcing traffic lawsProviding protection of life, property, and the preservation of peace and good order and providing emergency aid to the institutional communityProviding personal safety and crime prevention education to institutional communityEngaging in problem solving, threat mitigation, and conflict resolution for a wide range of issues and incidents involving citizens, groups, campus entities, government agencies, businesses, leaders, and othersPerforming preliminary and follow-up investigations to solve crimes, identify suspects and victims, apprehend criminals, and document case informationThe department is University Police and Security Services, the University's law enforcement authority operating 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. The primary goal is the protection of the University, its occupants, and the surrounding community. University Police operate in a full law enforcement capacity.Compensation is $28-$34/hour, minimum, based on qualifications and experience.Required qualifications include:Certification as a police officer in the State of Wisconsin upon appointmentKnowledge of or the ability to learn the functions of a campus law enforcement operationsAssociates degree or higherEffective oral and written communicationKnowledge of federal, state laws and UW System rulesKnowledge of current investigatory techniques and proceduresPreferred qualifications include:Previous law enforcement experienceTo ensure consideration, applications received by 10/27/2025 are ensured full consideration.
