AAHOA is the voice of owners in the hospitality industry and the largest hotel owners association in the nation. As a key member of the AAHOA Executive Leadership Team and leader of the Advocacy/Government Affairs Team, the Sr. Director of Government Affairs reports directly to the President & CEO and oversees the Government Affairs team, based in Washington, D.C. and Atlanta, GA.


The Sr. Director of Government Affairs shall perform duties that are predominantly intellectual and varied in nature, requiring creative, analytical, evaluative, interpretive, and/or critical thinking; which would involve evaluation of pending legislation; surveying legislation's impact on the Association; developing the Association's response to legislation; building relationships with federal, state, and local authorities, regulatory agency heads, and key policymakers; developing government affairs strategies; enhancing the Association's image and writing testimony and talking points for campaigns. 


Duties and Responsibilities

The primary function of the Sr. Director, Government Affairs, is to spearhead the government affairs of the association. You must be diligent and proactive, show excellent business judgment, employ effective strategic and tactical thinking, and have the ability to work both collaboratively and independently in a supportive, team environment. In addition, you will be expected to:


  1. Identify and advance political and legislative opportunities at the federal, state, and local levels that have an impact on AAHOA and its members. Perform activities and actions of Federal, State, and Local Government along with the lobbyists in an accurate and timely manner.
  2. Collaborate with the President & CEO and appropriate AAHOA executive and senior staff to develop a strategic vision for AAHOA for federal legislative activities and state government affairs activities.
  3. Monitor and analyze proposed legislation to determine its effects on the industry; determines the most appropriate positions in collaboration with AAHOA’s Board and senior staff, and develop and implement government affairs strategies to achieve favorable results.
  4. Oversees and participates in preparing and delivering testimony, position statements, talking points, written reports, memos, and bulletins sent to AAHOA members.
  5. Directs funding for sponsorships in support of federal legislative and state government affairs activities and goals.
  6. Develop, implement, and lead a strategic approach to advocacy by advocating at the federal, state, and local levels to promote or oppose legislation in order to minimize potential risks and protect the interests of AAHOA and its members.
  7. Educate members about the AAHOA Political Action Committee (PAC) and oversee the activities and assignment of the AAHOA PAC.
  8. Engage in political activities on behalf of AAHOA and ensure appropriate relationship building with existing and incoming federal, state, and local elected officials to address legislation that has an impact on AAHOA and its members. 
  9. Host meetings with key U.S. Senators, Representatives, and staffers during trips to Washington, D.C., to maintain and build relationships.
  10. Host, coordinate, and lead meetings involving government affairs issues including, but not limited to, the National Advocacy Conferences, and the D.C. Delegations, as appropriate.
  11. Create alliances with other entities and associations to advance the interests of AAHOA and its members.
  12. Prepare an annual Strategic Plan for the Governmental Affairs Committee.
  13. Serve as the Executive Staff Liaison for all assigned AAHOA Committees or Teams, and related Special Interest Groups, including the Governmental Affairs Committee.
  14. Develop suitable advocacy materials and campaigns.
  15. Ensure that the association is compliant with U.S. registration, lobbying disclosure, and campaign finance laws.
  16. Perform other duties as assigned.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from a four-year accredited college/university.
  • Proven track record with legislative bodies, executive agencies, trade associations, and policy organizations in the U.S. (at least eight years of experience).
  • Ability to develop and complete strategic and tactical plans, deliver exceptional business results and impact, and adapt in the face of obstacles.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills with both technical and non-technical audiences as well as extensive experience in internal and external partner management.
  • Willingness to provide regular and timely reports and updates.
  • Ability to travel up to 20% of the time.
  • Established relationships with Members of Congress, Congressional staff, congressional agencies, and related organizations a huge plus.
  • Knowledge of federal PAC organizations and rules.
  • Ability to lead staff teams and employ management processes to achieve objectives across the Association and with external groups and understand production processes and evaluation tools.
  • Ability to clearly articulate and communicate ideas, organizational strategies, and directives with excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Advanced interpersonal skills around building strong relationships with individuals across the political and advocacy spectrum.
  • Strong knowledge of hospitality industry issues.
  • Excellent problem-solving and negotiating skills.
