Special hiring rates: $40,000.00 - Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) and Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) (SPB 2984-2)


Nature of Work

This position works under administrative direction of the Chief of the Asbestos Compliance program in the Radiation, Toxics and Indoor Air Division within the Office of Environmental Health Services.


Duties of this position include but are not limited to:

  • Conducting a predetermined number of AHERA/Worker Protection inspections in public and private schools (K-12) in accordance with grant work plan
  • Inspecting asbestos abatement projects for compliance with State requirements and proper work methods
  • Conducting licensed inspection of contractors and/or individuals working at an asbestos abatement project
  • Prioritizing and conducting public education and outreach
  • As requested, conducting asbestos compliance investigations and providing enforcement actions
  • Auditing asbestos training providers
  • Submitting all administrative documents, including itineraries and monthly reports, in a timely manner
  • Promoting division activities through technical assistance and public outreach
  • Supporting and assisting with the implementation of waiver program for the new law and rule for asbestos program AHERA
  • Attending training courses as required to perform job responsibilities, I.E. asbestos inspector, management planner etc.
  • Developing and preparing reports and correspondence, and communicating with the public and other stakeholders
  • Assisting with clandestine laboratory remediation program and First Energy Beaver Valley Power Station (BVPS) grant


Other duties as assigned. Location will be Fairmont, WV, Marion County.


Minimum Qualifications

Training:Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in natural or applied science, engineering, or occupational safety and health.

Substitution: Full-time or equivalent part-time paid inspection, technical, or professional employment in one of the areas of assignment may substitute for the required training on a year-to-year-basis.


Experience: One year of full-time or equivalent part-time paid professional employment in the field of environmental inspection or environmental compliance in one of the areas of assignment.


Special Requirements: Must possess a valid driver's license. For work in the areas of hazardous waste management and solid waste management, must take and pass physical examination within the first six months of employment and submit to annual follow-up examinations. Failure to pass the initial examination will result in termination of employment. Failure to pass a subsequent examination may result in reassignment.


Note: Personnel engaged in activities associated with hazardous wastes risk exposure to situations or chemicals which may cause illness or injury if proper procedures are not followed.
