Position Purpose

The Digital Strategist leads, in collaboration with the Client Service Team, the creation of digital marketing plans for one or more of BDI’s clients, and creates digital strategy to acquire, cultivate, retain, and upgrade online donors. This position combines significant strategic planning, digital media management, email platform, analytic and account management experience, along with the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, creative environment with ever-shifting schedules and priorities.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develops and presents strategic plans and budgets covering digital fundraising efforts across multiple digital channels for clients across multiple verticals
  • Consult with clients educating and informing on digital strategy specific to client goals
  • Participate in creative and strategy meetings to ensure digital campaigns are accurate, timely and following our overall digital strategy recommendations
  • Provides strategic direction for email marketing campaigns, website marketing, digital media including programmatic, paid social and paid search efforts, social media strategy, emerging media and other digital marketing tactics
  • Evaluates client campaign results reports; identifies performance, trends and recommends modifications and opportunities for growth
  • Collaborates with the Creative team, Client Service team, and the Digital team to create engaging network and custom digital campaigns to support client goals
  • Stays current with and conducts research and evaluation of emerging digital trends, channels, best practice and prepares recommendation of implementation into BDI Digital strategy
  • Conducts research and evaluation of emerging digital platforms and tools and prepares recommendation of implementation into BDI Digital strategy
  • Leads client-facing, internal meetings, and partner meetings
  • Ensures deadlines, campaign goals and budgets are met
  • Assists directors and other teams with other activities as assigned
  • Manages the day-to-day responsibilities of additional Digital Strategists as they are added to the team
  • Other responsibilities as assigned
  • Under the direction of the BDI Marketing team, selects topics and writes/records two pieces of BDI Marketing content per fiscal year (Quick Shots, Inspire, Webinars, and podcasts)


Skills and Abilities

  • Fundraising Skills: Familiarity with digital direct response marketing strategy and tactics, and how to measure the impact of various channels and campaigns; Understanding of current industry best practices and emerging fundraising and marketing strategies; Solid instincts for compelling creative design that will elicit donor action
  • Digital Marketing Skills: Demonstrated ability to develop and execute marketing plans. Knowledge of and significant experience with online marketing for nonprofits, including all the following disciplines: email fundraising, website marketing, programmatic media, paid search, analytics and paid social; Experience with platforms such as Qgiv, DonorPerfect, Blackbaud Luminate or Online Express, Salsa, Salesforce, or Classy is highly desired. Knowledge of CMS and WordPress a plus; Familiarity with multiple email marketing platforms such as Mail Chimp, Constant Contact, Blackbaud Luminate or Hubspot
  • Digital Analytics Skills: Experience generating reports and interpreting data from Google Analytics, and Google Data Studio; Experience with tracking set up with Google Tag Manager; Expertise working with data and using past results to drive future strategy. Must be able to read and interpret data to inform real time campaign optimizations. Ability to create, manipulate and analyze data in Excel is required
  • Relationship Building: Must be friendly, trustworthy, knowledgeable, and professional. Must demonstrate ability to establish and develop relationships with prospects and serve as an ambassador of BDI. Positive attitude, good collaborator
  • Leadership Skills: Provides strong leadership, sets a good example, skilled decision maker, motivator, coach, encourager, and instills confidence In team members to follow them
  • Communication Skills: Must demonstrate an advanced ability to read, analyze, and interpret agency documents, and respond effectively to inquiries. Must demonstrate good grammar, punctuation, and proofreading skills. The position requires regular contact both inside and outside the agency
  • Reasoning Skills: Must demonstrate ability to define problems, collect data, interpret, and understand data and analyses, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Must be extremely efficient, organized, process-oriented, resourceful
  • Writing Skills: Outstanding grammar and written communications skills. Demonstrated ability to develop and execute marketing plans on schedule and write concisely and efficiently to promote the mission of the client
  • Computer Skills:Must demonstrate proficiency in the use and knowledge of integrated computer systems and business-related software such as Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, Outlook, Workfront, and Dynamics and quickly learn, understand, and implement the operation of the agency’s e-Tools
  • Decision Making and Problem Solving: Must demonstrate strong decision-making, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills. Must be proactive, self-motivated, and able to take initiative, focus, and prioritize tasks
  • Attention to Detail: Must pay close attention to detail and demonstrate excellent follow-through
  • Must be punctual, flexible, and able to function well in a fast-paced environment and meet deadlines


Educational Requirements and Qualifications

  • BA or BS preferred, ideally in Marketing, Communications, Advertising, Business, Analytics, or a related field
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in online marketing, digital strategy and fundraising experience required
  • Account management experience strongly preferred
