Job Summary

The Trauma Educator plays a lead role in the development, implementation and evaluation of trauma educational programs, projects and materials provided to hospital staff, physicians, patients and families across the trauma continuum. Works closely with all Trauma Services team members, hospital and medical staff to assure compliance with state and national trauma center requirements.  The position requires flexible work hours which may include off-shifts, and weekends based on the needs of the department.



Minimum Job Qualifications

  • Licensure or other certifications: Licensed to practice as an RN in Georgia. Professional certification in a relevant trauma clinical care area is required within two (2) years of hire (TCRN, CEN, CCRN, etc.).

  • Educational Requirements: Bachelors Degree. A degree in nursing (either BSN or MSN).

  • Minimum Experience: Three (3) to five (5) years experience in trauma nursing across the continuum. Professional organization membership within one (1) month of hire into the role. TNCC Instructor status required within one (1) year of hire. TNCC Course Director status required within two (2) years of hire. ATCN validation required within one (1) year of hire. ATCN Faculty required within two (2) years of hire.

Preferred Job Qualifications

  • Preferred Licensure or other certifications: TNCC Course Director, ATCN Faculty, ATLS Course Coordinator.

  • Preferred Educational Requirements: Master's Degree (Nursing or other if possessing a BSN) within five (5) years.

  • Preferred Experience: Experience with staff education (nursing instructor, simulation, skills validator, superuser, etc.).

Essential Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Trauma Education Develops, implements and evaluates trauma education programs for all staff following the requirements set forth by the American College of Surgeons (ACS) guidelines found in the  "Resources for Optimal Care of the Injured Patient" and the Georgia State Office of EMS and Trauma. Evaluates effectiveness of these trauma education programs and revises programs, as needed. Provides education on new or revised trauma policies, procedures, processes and guidelines. Collaborates with Trauma Program Director, PI Coordinator(s), and Unit Educators in performing ongoing trauma education needs assessment of staff providing trauma care.  Provides education to address the needs identified. Maintains knowledge of current evidence-based practice and incorporates findings into trauma education programs. Coordinates all aspects of Trauma Services sponsored continuing education courses (i.e. TNCC/TCAR/SATL/ATCN). Prepares and submits necessary applications to obtain EMS, Nursing, and CME continuing education credits, as appropriate, for trauma educational programs provided by Trauma Services staff.

  • Performance Improvement Utilizes Trauma Registry and Trauma PI data in the development of trauma educational programs. Assists ED and inpatient leadership teams and staff in achieving compliance with unit-specific Trauma PI indicators. Actively participates in Trauma Services PI initiatives.

  • Leadership/Administrative Serves as role model in the specialty of trauma nursing. Serves as a mentor to Registered Nurses in the organization. Serves as an active member on Georgia Committee for Trauma Excellence (GCTE), Regional Trauma Advisory Committee (RTAC) and specific hospital committees as requested by the Trauma Program Director. Provides necessary support for all NGMC trauma center verification and re-verification activities. Assists in the development and implementation of trauma-related policies, procedures, protocols and practice guidelines throughout the organization. Performs all other duties as assigned by the Trauma Program Director.
