You're in charge of your professional development.Gain the skills necessary for advancement through our comprehensive online and field training.The PositionThe Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is seeking two dedicated, hands-on individuals to fill a Transportation Technician II position with Region Two's Paint and Graffiti Crew located at 1950 S 500 W, Salt Lake City, UT 84115. This is a very important position that is part of a team that oversees/is involved with the construction and maintenance of state roads and Keeps Utah Moving as safely as possible.Principle DutiesAs a transportation technician in maintenance, you will learn about general maintenance activities related to state routes, highways, and other transportation infrastructure. Your responsibilities will include operating heavy machinery such as snowplows, salt spreaders, front-end loaders, and backhoes to maintain the roads, inspecting and testing materials used, and utilizing software to manage the Department's assets. After 18 months, each transportation technician is expected to cross-train in various construction areas.As part of our Paint and Sign Crew, you are responsible for:Roadway pavement markings throughout the region which includes preparing surface for application, removal of old markings or temporary markings for all crosswalks, arrows, symbols, striping, and all signage.Assisting in the removal of graffiti throughout the region.Night shift work typically from May to October.During the winter months, you will assist a maintenance station with:Removing snow from state roadways using snowplows/front-end loaders/salt spreaders/graders/blowers, and other related equipment. You could be assigned to various different maintenance stations depending on needs.Performing general maintenance to roadway and drainage features.Performing general maintenance on equipment.Completing other duties as assigned and needed by department leadership.Minimum QualificationsPossess a valid Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or is able to obtain one within six months of hire through Department-provided training and participate in the Region's snow plan.Is able and willing to report to the UDOT Paint Crew located at 1950 S 500 W, Salt Lake City, UT 84115 within a 30-minute response time.Be available to provide 24-hour availability.Provide a personal smartphone with data, eligible to receive a monthly taxable allowance to offset the cost of cell plan cost.Be physically able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds and perform other physically demanding tasks as required.Demonstrate reliability and the ability to work effectively in a team environment.Be willing to complete continued education through the UDOT Transportation Technician Education Program (TEP).Obtain and maintain Region required certifications within the first year of employment.PreferencesPreference may be given to current Transportation Technician I's and II's.Preference may also be given to applicants who: possess Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL), have completed Transportation Technician II training through the Transportation Education Program (TEP), have prior UDOT maintenance or construction experience, have professional work experience operating heavy equipment, have professional work experience with, or knowledge of, roadway maintenance. construction practices and snow removal operations.Supplemental InformationRegistration with the FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse (Clearinghouse) is a requirement for all commercial driver license and learner permit holder's. Selected candidate will be required to register and authorize UDOT to conduct full pre-employment queries and limited queries on their CDL for the duration of their employment in order to be selected for this role.This position is subject to pre-employment drug testing and random drug and alcohol testing of employees after hire. A conditional offer of employment may be made pending drug test results.This position requires you to frequently be exposed to hazards and discomforts of traffic and environmental conditions due to the nature of the work assignment.This position requires physical exertion. May require the ability to stand; walk over rough surfaces; bend, crouch, stoop, stretch, reach, lift moderately heavy items (up to 50 lbs.) in a recurring manner and/or for long periods of time.Employee may be reassigned to a different location as deemed necessary by the Region Director/Group Leader.Why Should You Join Our Team?The work we do matters.
