Director Of AdvisingReporting to the Assistant Provost of Student Success for Advising, the Director of Advising at Eugene Lang College is responsible for providing leadership and management inclusive of advice, support, mentoring, and formal supervision to academic advisors, senior academic advisors, managers of advising, assistant directors and/or associate directors of advising. It is expected that they will accomplish this by using acquired knowledge, prior experiences, and industry best practices. Additionally, they are expected to provide academic advising to an assigned population of undergraduate and/or graduate students pursuing degrees(s) at Eugene Lang College. The Academic Advising unit is an integral part of the university's Student Success division. All members of the Academic Advising unit are active participants in university-wide programs and initiatives that promote student persistence, community building, and staff development.The New School is an equal opportunity employer. We strongly encourage applications from individuals who are committed to our mission and who seek to work collaboratively with all members of our community.ResponsibilitiesSupervise the unit of Eugene Lang College advising within Student Success advising.Assist with supporting strategic planning efforts and execution with Student Success Advising (SSA) and/or with your college advising unit.Initiate, manage, and contribute to unit and SS assessment and retention initiatives.Establish and cultivate relationships with administrators and faculty to ensure accurate and timely communication of student needs, obstacles, and questions.Partner with program directors, department chairs and/or faculty in assigned programs regarding academic planning; attend and participate in regular meetings held by programs and schools.Provide guidance regarding University, school-specific, and program-specific policies with respect to student status, transfer credit evaluations, advanced placement and advanced standing requests, exceptions to degree requirements, degree audits to determine student eligibility to graduate, probationary status, and dismissals.Enhanced budget oversight and decision making responsibilities; participate in budget discussions and access to budget information.Lead or co-lead hiring processes for new advising staff, including reviewing applications, interviews, and contributing to final candidate selection.Facilitate performance feedback and professional guidance through supervision and mentorship of team members.Create projects and workflows for the advising unit to promote student and staff retention within Advising and across Student Success.Create workflows between partner offices (registrar, study abroad, program leadership) and advising.Lead strategic planning and execution within Academic Advising and across Student Success, and participate in advising leadership initiatives, including planning and leading Advisor Forums and other community building and professional development projects.Chair and/or serve on multiple committees, both internal and external to the advising unit.Enhance faculty/advising communication through cultivation of relationships and workflow across divisions, schools, colleges, and programs.Maintain strict compliance with all mandated policies and procedures, including but not limited to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and Title IX.Coordinate and collaborate on initiatives, events, and programs that promote student persistence, retention, and academic development.Maintain an accurate, up-to-date body of knowledge about curricula across the institution, particularly those relevant to the assigned population of students, and provide referrals to other departments or areas within the institution as needed.Exercise professional discretion and judgment to escalate student questions or concerns appropriately when necessary.Participate in orientation, academic, career services events, recruitment, student life and engagement initiatives, and graduation.Represent Student Success at programs and functions outside of normal business hours as needed.Stay apprised of national developments in the field of academic advising and engage in ongoing training and development opportunities.Incorporate tools and assessments into advising to help students understand their personal preferences, strengths, and weaknesses as they pertain to academic decision-making.Manage and Developmentally advise students with the goal of supporting their academic progress via scheduled and drop-in appointments, both in-person and remote.Maintain and update student records and data, including documentation of student interactions, in relevant institutional systems (Banner, DegreeWorks, Starfish) accurately and in a timely manner.Minimum QualificationsBachelor's Degree and 8-10 years related experience with a focus on student engagement and advising.5+ years of experience supervising or co-supervising individuals.Superior student services skills.Experience developing and/or implementing policy as pertains to student status at a college or university.Demonstrated excellence in interpersonal skills, including sensitivity to cultural differences.Proven abilities in personal judgment and critical thinking skills to help others make values-based decisions regarding academic, career, and other success paths.Strong presentation, written and verbal communication skills.Demonstrated organizational skills and ability to work on multiple projects both independently and as part of a team.Proficiency in Microsoft Office and ability to learn new computer applications.Able to lift and carry objects, less than 40 pounds, on occasion.Preferred QualificationsMaster's degree in Higher Education, Higher Education Administration, or a field related to academic offerings at The New School.6-8 or more years of professional work experience in higher education, with a focus on advising.Knowledge of Banner, DegreeWorks, and Starfish.Experience with NACADA, EAB, NASPA, LinkedIn, or other advising-related professional organizations and tools.Work ModeHybrid/Split - Employees hired for this position have regularly scheduled, consistent percentage of time on campus (ex 1-4x/week) and also work some of the time remotely.Salary Range$108,000 per annumWe look forward to receiving your application
