Summary:

As the second level of the Technical Career Ladder (TCL), the Senior R&D Technician will work in the R&D Ostomy Materials Analysis Group. The individual is a part of a larger team that works together to support cross-functional team(s) in solving problems and developing new products and technologies. The individual can expect high collaboration and many opportunities to learn about materials, their properties, and why they matter. The primary body of work focuses on manufacturing, troubleshooting, supporting new product development, and regulatory compliance. The individual can expect to interface with engineers, scientists, and their supervisor/team. The individual performs assigned tasks and contributes to the execution of projects through laboratory testing and basic analysis of test data and plays an active role in the integration of new technologies, methods, research, and processes

Responsibilities:

  • Perform laboratory testing using established test methods and procedures on the following instrumentation: FTIR spectrometer, Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC), Thermogravimetric Analyzer (TGA), HPLC, GC, Optical and Digital Microscopes, and Tensile Test Station
  • Assist with set-up and maintenance of instrumentation and test equipment
  • Assist in the development and validation (Gage R &R) of new test methods
  • Contribute to the development of work instructions, test methods, and SOPs
  • Prepare samples and prototypes
  • Create and maintain adequate and accurate records
  • Complete departmental equipment maintenance checklists
  • Other duties as assigned

Documentation:

  • Create and maintain adequate and accurate records using laboratory notebooks, Electronic Document Management System (EDMS), and MS Excel
  • Create laboratory reports detailing testing results and fundamental statistical analysis

Collaboration/Leadership:

  • Demonstrate interest in team activities and positively contribute to outcomes
  • Ability to work independently with direction from Engineers, Scientists, and Supervisor
  • Identify and suggest ways to improve inefficiencies and eliminate roadblocks

Other:

  • Stay current with all assigned training
  • Other duties as needed or required

Requirements:

  • 2-4 Years overall experience
  • Related work experience in a testing laboratory
  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biology, engineering, materials science, or other science/technical field a plus

Specialized Skills/Technical Knowledge:

  • Working knowledge of FTIR spectrometer, DSC, TGA, HPLC, LC-MS, GC, and GC-MS a plus
  • Ability to troubleshoot and identify servicing requirements and failure modes of instruments and equipment a plus
  • Ability to read, understand, and follow test methods and other work instructions
  • Familiarity with protocols and laboratory testing in a regulated environment
  • Working knowledge (hands-on experience) of laboratory equipment
  • Ability to prioritize projects based on timelines and business needs
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
  • Strong communication skills-verbal and written
  • Understanding of fundamental statistical analysis
  • Knowledge of polymers and other material properties is a plus
  • Experience with extractables and leachables testing is a plus
