Job Description: Principal/Senior Embedded Software Engineer



My client is seeking a highly experienced Principal Embedded Software Engineer to lead the architectural design and development of customer-facing applications and deployments, shaping the future of embedded systems. In this pivotal role, you will drive the design, development, and integration of platform and application software for embedded systems, specifically for controlling large-scale, heavy lift machine applications. This hybrid position requires a minimum of 2-3 days per week in Somerville, MA, and reports to the Director of Embedded Systems.

What You'll Do

  • Innovate: Drive the creation of groundbreaking embedded software control solutions, from concept to execution.
  • Collaborate: Work with diverse cross-functional teams to strategize, design, and develop mechatronic controls and communication systems.
  • Solve: Lead troubleshooting efforts to determine root causes and resolve issues during system integration and validation.
  • Guide: Provide critical input to ensure our software aligns with overall system and user needs.
  • Craft: Develop cutting-edge board and application level software systems, maintaining high standards for software quality.
  • Shape: Develop team processes, mentor team members, and apply your leadership skills effectively.

In This Role You Will:

  • Architect and take ownership of the design and implementation of key software systems for various cylinder products.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders across engineering disciplines to write requirements that inform software and systems design.
  • Design and document software modules to be developed by other team members in C, C++, and Python.
  • Lead debugging and troubleshooting efforts.
  • Participate in planning activities using Agile methodologies.
  • Review and document safety-critical systems, actively engaging in FMEA processes.

Requirements

  • At least 8 years of professional experience developing C, C++, and Python applications and platforms in an electromechanical product environment.
  • Proven expertise in developing mathematical and statistical models to analyze data sets and drive innovative solutions.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce robust, documented software modules independently.
  • Experience managing and improving embedded release processes.
  • Expert-level experience in designing and interfacing with motor control systems, motion planning, and/or battery management systems.
  • Experience with common embedded communications interfaces: CAN, SPI, I2C, UART.
  • Ability to read and understand technical literature such as datasheets, schematics, production process diagrams, and academic papers.

Bonus Points If You Have:

  • Experience with CAN protocols, including J1939 or CANOpen.
  • Experience with software safety standards like ISO 26262, IEC 61508, or DO-178C.
  • Familiarity with kinematics and motion planning.
