Purpose of Position:

Under the direct supervision of the Dietitian Level IV, enrolls participants, provides nutrition education via counseling, and facilitates group discussions with an emphasis on the importance of breastfeeding and sound nutritional practices with minimal supervisory responsibility.


Examples of Typical Tasks:

Follows policies and procedures as outlined by the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) WIC Program, the New York State Department of Agriculture, and Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center.

Performs Quality Assurance Surveys via observation for anthropometry, nutrition education or counseling using individual or group facilitated discussions or Fit WIC Activities and the documentation of all including the distribution of Farmer’s Market Coupons, when assigned. Enrolls/certifies eligible participants in the WIC Program utilizing the New York Women Infants and Children's (NYWIC) electronic system.

Documents education provided on the same day. Manually enrolls participants when NYWIC is not operational.

Enters information into NYWIC and remotely issues benefits once the system is operational. Counsel participants or caretakers for high-risk issues, general healthy lifestyles, and feeding problems.

Provides a care plan for high-risk individuals by documenting the assessment of subjective and objective data in NYWIC.

Conducts participant-centered facilitated group discussions, Fit WIC exercises, or food demonstrations and documents topics covered on the same day. Completes Health and Nutrition Updates (HNU) by performing anthropometry and updating any high-risk issues and documents same in NYWIC on the same day.

Performs point of care testing (POCT) or uses a noninvasive method to collect hemoglobin results for participants as needed.

Distributes Farmer’s Market Checks, explains their use to participants, and documents their issuance to each active household member in NYWIC. Provide food package benefits via NYWIC. Screens Medical Referral Forms, Medica


Minimum Qualifications

Qualification Requirements: For appointment to Assignment Level I

1. Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university, with a major in Dietetics or Foods and Nutrition in a program approved by the American Dietetic Association (ADA); or,

2. Registration or eligibility for registration by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) as a Registered Dietitian or New York State Certification as a Dietitian-Nutritionist. For appointment to Assignment Level II 1. Registration or eligibility for registration by the CDR as a Registered Dietitian or New York State Certification


For appointment to Assignment Levels III and IV 1. Registration by the CDR as a Registered Dietitian or New York State Certification as a Dietitian-Nutritionist.


Special Note for Dietitians assigned to Post-Acute Care (Long-Term Care) facility: Under the Medicare and Medicaid Programs, Reform of Requirements for Long-Term Care Facilities, as outlined in Section 483.60 of Title 42 of the Code of Federal Regulations all newly-hired Dietitians, Levels I-IV assigned to a Post-Acute Care (Long-Term Care) facility, are required to have New York State Certification, issued by the New York State Education Department (NYSED), as a Dietitian-Nutritionist at the time of hire. Dietitians, Levels I-IV hired prior to November 28, 2016, assigned to a Post-Acute Care (Long-Term Care) facility are required to obtain New York State Certification, issued by the NYSED, as a Dietitian-Nutritionist on or before November 28, 2021.

All Radiologic Technologists in Assignment Levels II and III shall receive a differential of $7,500 per annum to be cross-trained on different modalities of radiologic imaging and to be cross-assigned (once trained) to different imaging settings depending on patient volume and staffing needs within a facility.
