The Department of Medicine, Division of Nephrology is seeking a full time Scientific Writer. The Scientific Writer will be a senior member of the team, possessing an advanced understanding of processes, procedures, and policies.


Essential Functions:

Scientific Article Preparation and Content Development

  • Responsible for writing and preparing complex original scientific reports based on the end-of-study results of research. The individual writes, reviews, and finalizes reports including all data, technical content, and ancillary information according to regulatory requirements and project timelines. Prepare and write final technical reports for publication in scientific journals using knowledge and expertise with advanced scientific practices and principles, from raw and/or processed data. Previous experience will demonstrate a proven track record in authoring publications in peer reviewed journals (including lead or senior authorship).
  • Reports may include components such as stability, release, comparability, method development, method validation, and others.
  • Write and publish articles and other forms of communication that articulate technical and science-focused research and transform it into more generally-consumable language and content.
  • Determines best presentation for data and may assemble raw data in intermediate tables and graphs. Resultant data presentation may be incorporated into poster presentations, peer-reviewed journal articles, and other forms of reports.
  • Edits, rewrites, and/or prepares drafts, as needed, of designated scientific documents for project teams.
  • Writes for online and print materials, including research publications, website articles, social media posts, etc.
  • Reviews, translates, synthesizes, and contextualizes peer-reviewed research for lay audiences.


Grant Application/Regulatory Approval Document Preparation

  • Responsible Preparation of proposals and grant applications, and performance of responsible professional and administrative work in researching, identifying, developing and responding to public and private grant opportunities.
  • Generates proposals and supporting documents in response to solicitations.
  • Generates revenues for the lab through timely submission of well researched, well written and well documented grant proposals.
  • Maintains and implements funding calendar activities, including cultivation activities.
  • Writes reports to government, corporate, foundations and other funders.
  • Acts as liaison with program staff.
  • Identifies funding opportunities and new program areas to match the Institute investigator’s priorities, using research tools.
  • Engages with program officers at organizations to solicit invitations to submit proposals.
  • Evaluate rules for submission of manuscripts to research journals, format documents to said rules, show competency in terms of manuscript submissions.
  • With minimal guidance, explore references within the scientific literature related to specific research questions.
  • Develop figures and graphs, based on data, for manuscript and/or grant applications, based on raw data.
  • Work with team members to develop methods for data analysis allowing for inclusion in research publications and/or grant applications.


Project Management and Coordination

  • Leads the scientific publication writing process.
  • Builds and maintains project timelines.
  • Communicates project status and anticipates/mitigates risks.
  • Oversees development of scientific content for various activities.
  • Participates in cross-functional team and interdepartmental projects.
  • Assists in the creation and formatting of technical SOP documents.
  • Provides guidance to Scientists on formatting of report, protocol, method, and summary report documents and maintains the templates for the various scientific and technical documents.
  • Responsible to work on documents designed to gain regulatory approval, be it for studies designed to address experimental questions in animal models or humans; specifically, submissions to local IACUC and IRB


Administrative and Digital/Online Presence Miscellaneous

  • Special Projects as needed
  • Oversees the Maintenance bibliographies, Endnote, and PI’s CV.
  • Develops and maintains templates for communications, presentations, reports, etc.
  • Oversees the development of and maintains lab webpages, including SharePoint.
  • Oversees social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn).
  • Improves the visibility and messaging of the organization’s online presence.


Minimum Requirements:

Master's degree in appropriate area of specialization and two years of relevant experience, or a Bachelor's degree in appropriate area of specialization and four years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced/terminal degree in a science or health profession strongly preferred.
  • Strong writing skills as related to scientific communications and medical education.
  • Significant experience in an academic medical environment, working in research involved with technical/scientific writing.
  • Grant writing experience and scientific manuscript preparation and submission experience.
  • Excellent organizational and planning skills; work independently, leadership ability to manage multiple projects and work assignments with competing deadlines.
  • High level of proficiency in Adobe, MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and various databases required.
  • Experience with various graphic and presentation software a plus.
  • Website development.
  • Excellent organization and communication skills required.
  • Ability to manage both day-to-day operations as well as project work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent writing, communication, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to multi-task and adjust priorities as necessary.
  • Must be self-motivated and able to work autonomously.
