UPMC Mercy is hiring a full-time Surgical Technologist to join our team  We are offering Sign-On Bonuses to eligible Surg Tech hires of up to $15,000 depending on level of experience and commitment term  Being a Surg Tech at Mercy Same Day Surgery Center (SDSC) OR comes along with earning competitive wages, having an incomparable benefits package, including tuition reimbursement, and working with top clinicians, leading researchers, and the most modern equipment and technology in heath care today SDSC OR currently has 6 state of the art operating rooms. UPMC Mercy Pavilion | Pittsburgh, Pa. Our surgical specialties include Ophthalmology, ENT, Voice, and Ortho Upper & Lower Extremity. Our team conducts mostly outpatient surgeries, and we also provide Retina coverage 24/7 on call for emergencies. UPMC Mercy is the only hospital in a 100-mile radius to perform Retina surgery. You'll be joining a team of impressive, hardworking people. Two of the Surgical Techs on our team were recognized by the American Laryngology Society and were given a Presidential Citation in April 2022  For scheduled cases, surgical hours are from daylight to early evening. Specifically, the schedule for SDSC OR is as follows:
  • Monday through Friday, Variable Daylight shifts:
    • (6:30am- 3:00pm)
    • (8:30am- 5:00pm, until all scheduled cases are finished)
  • Call starts at 3:00pm Monday- Friday until 6:30am the next day 
    • Currently, typically called once every 8-10 weekdays 
  • Weekend Call starts 6:30am Saturday – Monday 6:30am
    • Currently, Weekend call is about once every 8-10 weekends 
  • Holiday call depends on where it falls during the week
  • Only on call for emergency Eye cases
The title and pay rate of these positions may vary depending upon years of relevant experience. Applicants will be placed in the appropriate job title and salary from the career ladder based on their individual experience and education.

Responsibilities:
  • Ensure all medications are labeled and handed to surgeon according to established policies and procedures.
  • Before an operation, help to prepare the operating room by setting up surgical instruments and equipment, sterile drapes, and sterile solutions. Assemble both sterile and non-sterile equipment. Adjust and check equipment to ensure it is working properly.
  • During surgery, efficiently pass instruments and other sterile supplies to surgeons and surgeon assistants. Hold retractors or instruments, cut sutures, sponge, or suction the operative site under the supervision of the surgeon and help count sponges, needles, supplies, and instruments.
  • Assist in the preparation, care for, and disposal of specimens taken for laboratory analysis and helps apply dressings.
  • Assist the surgical team with putting on sterile gowns and gloves.
  • After surgery, may help transfer patients to the recovery room. Clean and restock the operating room.
  • Prepare patients for surgery by wash, shave, and ensure aseptic incision sites. May transport patients to the operating room, help position them on the operating table, and cover them with sterile surgical drapes.
  • Ensure clean, safe environment through continued alertness to safety and explosive hazards and aseptic technique.
Continuing education requirements:
  • Compliance with continuing ed requirements specified by the credentialing organization for certification.  For individuals, not certified - must complete 30 hours of continuing ed every two years.
Specialty experience:  
  • Surgical specialties include but are not limited to: general, orthopedic, vascular, plastic and reconstructive, obstetrics and gynecology, thoracic, ophthalmic, neurosurgery, organ procurement, and endoscopic surgical settings. Access to medications is limited to the distribution of the medication to the nurse.
  • Completion of a formal surgical technician program offered by a community or junior college, vocational school, university, hospital or the military.
    • 0-2 years’ experience for Surgical Technologist
    • Recent & upcoming graduates from an accredited Surg Tech Program are welcomed to apply
  • Additional experience may qualify for Intermediate and Senior level titles.
  • Surgical specialties include but are not limited to: general, orthopedic, vascular, plastic and reconstructive, obstetrics and gynecology, thoracic, ophthalmic, neurosurgery, organ procurement and endoscopic surgical settings.
Certification Details - Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) or Technologist Surgery Certified (TSC):  Note: Staff employed to practice surgical technology by the health care facility on or before the effective date of the law (12/28/2020) or who were employed as a surg tech at another health care facility two years before effective date of the law are grandfathered and therefore not required to have certification. New graduates of a program sponsored by nationally recognized institutional or programmatic accreditation can work for six months prior to certification but must be certified within six months of program completion. Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
  • CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire
  • Act 33 Child Clearance with Renewal
  • Act 34 Criminal Clearance with Renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance
  • Basic Life Support or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
