Overview

The Firefighter/ALS is primarily responsible to perform fire suppression and rescue activities. This position will work as part of a response team dedicated to saving lives and protecting property at the Wallops Flight Facility, Wallops Island, and the surrounding communities when called upon for mutual aid. Physical fitness to perform these duties is essential and the Firefighter must always remain in full duty status to perform these functions. The Firefighter must be able to wear protective ensembles to include structural bunker gear, total encapsulating HazMat suits, self-contained breathing apparatus, Class 3 harness, and any other ensemble deemed required for the functions of their duty.  

Responsibilities

  • Required to follow all company personnel and safety policies and perform all assigned duties in a safe work manner.  
  • Will arrive at work on time and be in proper uniform with issued equipment. Will be responsible for the cleanliness of uniform and equipment assigned.  
  • Attends training courses, reads, and understands assigned material related to emergency medical care, firefighting, ARFF, Hazardous Materials/WMD, Technical Rescue, and fire prevention.  
  • Responds to fire alarms, operates auxiliary equipment, deploys hose lines, operates nozzles, directs water streams, raises ladders, climbs ladders, uses fire extinguishers, forcible entry equipment, fans, saws, hooks, ropes, gas detectors, Thermal Imaging Cameras, computers, radios, and other equipment.  
  • Responds to vehicle accident scenes and performs extrication techniques using specialized heavy hydraulic equipment during emergency situations.  
  • Will operate in hazardous environments, confined spaces, and at heights.  
  • Possesses knowledge of size-up, rescue procedures, fire suppression techniques and their application in buildings, facilities, and aircraft related materials and systems.  
  • Performs rescue of incapacitated personnel as required.  
  • Provides standby support for aircraft arrivals/departures and related activities as required.  
  • Complies with department policies, rules, and regulations.  
  • Provides hazardous operational standbys as required.  
  • Maintains fire station, fire apparatus, tools, and appliances in a constant state of readiness.  
  • Possesses considerable knowledge of all fire apparatus, equipment, and their operation.  
  • Performs general up-keep of fire department property; prepares and submits reports and forms regarding supplies, equipment and other matters pertaining to his/her unit.  
  • Washes, cleans, and disinfects equipment, apparatus, and facilities  
  • Inspects PPE daily to ensure its serviceability and provides periodic reports on PPE.  
  • Participates in training exercises/scenarios and reviews and complies with Standard Operating Procedures.  
  • Conducts fire hydrant flow tests and records information for department use.  
  • Conducts annual hose testing and records information for department use.  
  • Assures vehicles and equipment are at a constant state of readiness.  
  • Performs basic fire prevention duties and pre-fire planning as required.  
  • Personnel assigned to this classification are subject to perform at the Technical Rescue and Haz Mat operational level and may be required to obtain technician level certification in these areas as required to participate on any specialty function.  
  • Drive and operate government vehicles.  
  • Receive and complete training for launch pad flight hardware fires and launch support as directed.  
  • Participates in certification training classes when offered and pass such classes per the certification criteria.  
  • This position does not have any supervisory responsibilities.  
  • Other duties as assigned 

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 21 years of age.  
  • Honorably discharged from the Armed Services (If Applicable)  
  • Must possess a DOD/IFSAC, Pro Board or State Firefighter I and II certification.  
  • Must possess technical rescue certifications to include: The Awareness Level for Rope Rescue, Confined Space Rescue, Vehicle and Machinery Rescue, Trench Rescue and Structural Collapse Rescue and Hazardous Materials certification to the Operations Level within one year of hire.  
  • Must possess one of the following certifications – DOD/IFSAC ARFF Firefighter, or Pro Board ARFF Firefighter within one year of hire date, preference given to those already certified as an IFSAC or Pro Board ARFF Firefighter.  
  • Must possess a valid American Heart Association ALS/BLS for Healthcare Providers (CPR and AED) certification card.  
  • Must have successfully completed the latest editions of the FEMA NIMS courses IS-100, IS-200, IS-700, and IS-800.  
  • Must possess an Emergency Vehicle Operator’s Course Certificate.  
  • Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license that is deemed acceptable by the Wallops Flight Facility.
