Summary

This is a Student Internship position under the Pathways Internship Program.

To qualify for this Internship, you MUST be a continuing student enrolled or accepted for enrollment for the current/upcoming semesters for the duration of the internship as a condition of employment, taking at least a half-time course load. You will be required to provide documentation to support eligibility. Students may be employed throughout the academic year.

Duties

This is a developmental position within the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), Department of Transportation (DOT). The position is designed to provide interns with challenging assignments that will broaden their perspectives on issues facing the government and prepare them for future positions throughout the government.

The Student Trainee (Transportation Specialist) Pathways Intern will have the opportunity to work in one of the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Offices and will assist higher-level staff with support in the coordination, facilitation, and implementation of the operations in the office to which they are assigned. This position will provide students an opportunity to be exposed and to participate in activities, innovations, and challenges facing the transportation industry today. Tasks will cover a wide range of technical, analysis and communications programs. Technical programs can include planning, environment, right-of way, procurement, design, construction. Program assignments can include Engineering, Civil Rights, Safety, Operations, Finance, and training.

Examples of specific tasks are:

Supporting Program Managers to meet program and project needs Researching and data analysis for Transportation Performance Measures Supporting Discretion Grant Project Risk Appetite and S&O assessments Supporting Emergency Relief program tracking and reporting Actively participating in planning and delivery of training workshops

The ideal candidate is a student dedicated to public service, interested in information technology, and working as a part of the Executive Branch. Ideal candidate possesses strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills. The ideal candidate enjoys multi-tasking, working at a fast-paced tempo, and does not become overwhelmed by competing demands and large volume of incoming information. The ideal candidate is self-motivated and able to deliver results with limited supervision and has the flexibility to adjust to changing work environments. Preferred fields of study are Engineering, Planning, Program Management, Environment, Safety, Finance, Statistics, Economics, Public Policy, research, data sciences and other related fields.
