Special Education Teacher Job Description

Position: Special Education Teacher

Location: New Bedford MA

Job Overview: The school is seeking a dedicated and experienced Special Education Teacher to join our team. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing specialized instruction and support to students with diverse learning needs. The Special Education Teacher will collaborate with general education teachers support staff and families to create an inclusive and supportive learning environment that meets the individual needs of each student.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Instructional Planning and Delivery:

    • Develop and implement Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) tailored to the unique needs of each student.
    • Design and deliver engaging differentiated lessons that accommodate various learning styles and abilities.
    • Utilize evidencebased teaching strategies to support student achievement and progress.

  2. Assessment and Evaluation:

    • Conduct regular assessments to monitor student progress and adjust instruction accordingly.
    • Prepare detailed progress reports and maintain accurate records of student performance.
    • Participate in IEP meetings providing input on student progress and recommendations for instructional strategies.

  3. Classroom Management:

    • Create a positive and inclusive classroom environment that fosters student engagement and success.
    • Implement effective behavior management strategies to support positive student behavior.
    • Establish and maintain clear expectations routines and procedures to ensure a structured learning environment.

  4. Collaboration and Communication:

    • Work closely with general education teachers paraprofessionals and other support staff to ensure a cohesive approach to student learning.
    • Communicate regularly with parents and guardians to keep them informed of student progress and any concerns.
    • Participate in team meetings and professional development opportunities to enhance teaching practices.

  5. Support Services:

    • Provide individualized support to students in small groups or oneonone settings as needed.
    • Coordinate with related service providers (e.g. speech therapists occupational therapists) to ensure comprehensive support for students.
    • Assist in the development and implementation of behavior intervention plans (BIPs) for students with behavioral challenges.

  6. Professional Development:

    • Stay current with best practices in special education through ongoing professional development.
    • Attend workshops conferences and training sessions as required by the district.
    • Share knowledge and expertise with colleagues to enhance the overall effectiveness of the special education program.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Special Education or a related field.
  • Valid Massachusetts teaching certification in Special Education.
  • Experience working with students with diverse learning needs including those with disabilities.
  • Strong knowledge of special education laws regulations and best practices.
  • Excellent communication interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
