Mason Student Health Services provides students with primary health, counseling, health education and prevention services in support of student learning and retention at George Mason University.
About the Position:
The Medical Assistant works interdependently with other healthcare professionals to provide high quality health care in the clinic setting. The Medical Assistant utilizes clinical and laboratory skills in preparing patients for provider visits, administering prescribed treatments and medications, performing diagnostic tests, and carrying out other duties as requested by the Executive Director.
Responsibilities:
Clinical Skills: Records patient intake including vital signs, allergies and medications;Performs procedures such as ear lavage, EKGs and basic first aid;Assists providers during procedures and chaperones sensitive exams;Follows OSHA safety practices, including handling of biohazard materials;Maintains a safe environment for staff and patients by proper sterilization of instruments, and cleaning and stocking of supplies; andMaintains competency and knowledge in all skills by participating in orientation, ongoing training and annual infection control training and competency review. Laboratory/Phlebotomy Techniques and Safety Practices: Safely operates and maintains all laboratory equipment;Performs CLIA waived testing;Proficiency in phlebotomy and universal safety precautions;Accurately documents laboratory test results.Properly stores and handles hazardous materials, cleaning agents and potentially infectious materials; andUpon completion of lab orientation, maintains competency in all laboratory procedures. Administers Immunizations: Safely and accurately administers immunizations;Participates in annual safe injection practices training and maintains knowledge through ongoing CDC training; andFollows CDC and WHO guidelines for vaccine recommendations and informs patients regarding required and administered vaccines. Committee Assignment: Participates as a member of a SHS committee; attends quarterly meetings, follows through on assignments, contributes to the maintenance of high-quality healthcare.Required Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent; Certification as a Medical Assistant or comparable experience gained through military or EMT training; Experience in working with college students; Experience providing excellent customer service; Knowledge of ambulatory care practices; Skilled in obtaining vital signs and performing other diagnostic procedures, such as EKGs; Ability to communicate verbally and in writing; Ability to use Electronic Medical Records; Knowledge of Adolescent and Adult Immunizations; Skilled in safely administering injections; Ability to perform phlebotomy, CLIA waived testing and operate laboratory equipment; Knowledge of guidelines for handing potentially infections and hazardous materials, and OSHA guidelines; and Ability to protect patient privacy and provide a welcoming demeanor to all patients.Preferred Qualifications:
Associate’s degree in related field; Experience typically obtained in 1 year as a Medical Assistant in an out-patient setting, or equivalent; Ability to manage patient load and the needs of the providers, gained through experience in an outpatient setting; and Ability to inform patients about immunizations and administer vaccines.Instructions to Applicants:
