POSITION: ECE Assistant I, II, III/Bus Driver

SALARY: $15.78-$19.43, per hour DOE

REPORTS TO: ECE Site Supervisor

LOCATION: Nespelem Head Start, Nespelem, WA

Basic Functions:  This is a non-exempt position.

ECE Asst. I: Assists one or more early childhood teachers in the education, care, supervision, and instruction of pre-school aged children, in classrooms, common areas, playgrounds, and during transportation at a center dedicated to school readiness goals in children, and in the community. Maintains and prepares classroom and related environments and materials.

ECE Asst. II: Assists one or more early childhood teachers in the education, care, supervision, and instruction of pre-school aged children, in classrooms, common areas, playgrounds, and during transportation at a center dedicated to school readiness goals in children, and in the community. Maintains and prepares classroom and related environments and materials. Assists early childhood teacher as needed with required forms. Assists in developing play-oriented curriculum.

ECE Asst. III: Assists one or more early childhood teachers in the education, care, supervision, and instruction of pre-school aged children, in classrooms, common areas, and playgrounds at a center dedicated to school readiness goals in children, and in the community. Maintains and prepares classroom and related environments and materials. Assists early childhood teacher as needed with required forms. Assists in developing play-oriented curriculum. Operate bus in accordance with all applicable local, tribal, state and federal regulations. Ensures the health, safety and welfare of the children, staff and volunteers during bus transportation to and from the center and on field trips. 

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS ECE Asst. I:

Education and Training:

Requires completion of a GED/High School diploma within 6 months of hire and completion of CDA or equivalent in early childhood education within two (2) years of hire with emphasis on pre-school age children.  Requires experience working with preschool aged children in a play-oriented learning or equivalent environment. Requires Pediatric First Aid and CPR Certificate, Health Clearance, TB Test, and Food Handlers Card must be completed within 3 weeks of hire.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:  

Requires basic knowledge of the principles and practices of age appropriate early child development applicable for an educational setting. Requires a basic knowledge of instruction methods for preschool-aged children.  Requires knowledge of basic clerical and record keeping processes.  Requires basic knowledge of and skill at using personal computers, games, and other equipment to support play, learning, record information, and send communications.  Requires sufficient human relation skills to work productively and cooperatively with teachers, students, and parents in informal settings, to exercise patience when conveying information, and demonstrate sensitivity to the needs of students.  May require knowledge of native language, culture, and traditions Requires the ability to assist teaching staff with implementation of play-oriented instructional activities.  Requires the ability to learn to assess the needs of individual students.  Requires the ability to conduct informal reading and project circles with individual and small groups of children and assist others with demonstrations of assigned subject matter.  Requires the ability to relate positively to students in a learning environment in a way that builds confidence and recognizes socioeconomic and cultural differences among children.  Requires the ability to balance children’s physical needs, emotional support, and deal with common behavior problems. Requires the ability to perform work indoors and outdoors in a classroom or playground environment engaged in work of a moderately active nature.  Requires normal hearing and speaking skills to communicate with staff and students.  Requires near visual acuity to read and write printed materials and observe the activities of children.  Requires sufficient ambulatory ability to move about classroom, common area, and playgrounds, assist with presentations, and reach classroom materials.  Requires the ability to stand, walk, and sit upright on a floor-level surface for extended periods of time (greater than 1 hour), and to lift, push, and pull light to medium objects on an occasional basis (10-50 lbs).  Requires personal appearance, grooming, attitudes, and language patterns that provide a suitable example to children.  Requires the ability to assist children on and off of a bus safely.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS ECE Asst. II:

Education and Training:

Requires a High School diploma and 6 months experience working with preschool aged children in a play-oriented learning or equivalent environment.  Requires completion of CDA or equivalent in early childhood education within two (2) years of original hire date as ECE Assistant with emphasis on pre-school age children. Requires a valid driver’s license and completion of Class C CDL with Passenger and Student Endorsement within 120 days of hire. Requires Pediatric First aid and CPR Certificate, Health Clearance, TB Test, and Food Handlers Card with 3 weeks of hire. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:  

Requires basic knowledge of the goals, principles, of and practices for implementing age appropriate child development and guidance in a pre-kindergarten environment.  Requires a basic knowledge of play-oriented subjects and learning sufficient to assist children with individual and group activities. Requires basic knowledge of child mobility, cognitive, and hygiene needs.  Requires basic knowledge of arithmetic, spelling, language and reading sufficient to assist pre-k students with reading, games, and projects.  Requires sufficient human relations skills to work cooperatively and exercise patience and sensitivity when interacting with students, staff and parents. May require knowledge of native language, culture, and traditions. Requires the ability to perform the essential responsibilities and work tasks of the position.  Requires the ability to understand and interpret an instructor's instructions in order to work with small groups of children, including those with special needs.  Requires the ability to understand the needs and differences of children and to reach and motivate them.  Requires the ability to balance emotional support and discipline to deal with behavior problems.  Requires ability to perform clerical and classroom support duties with minimum supervision.  Requires the ability to perform work indoors and outdoors in a classroom or playground environment engaged in work of a moderately active nature.  Requires normal hearing and speaking skills to communicate with staff and students.  Requires near visual acuity to read and write printed materials and observe the activities of children.  Requires sufficient ambulatory ability to move about classroom, common area, and playgrounds, assist with presentations, and reach classroom materials.  Requires the ability to stand, walk, and sit upright on a floor-level surface for extended periods of time (greater than 1 hour), and to lift, push, and pull light to medium objects on an occasional basis (10-50 lbs).  Requires personal appearance, grooming, attitudes, and language patterns that provide a suitable example to children.  Requires the ability to assist children on and off of a bus safely.

Requires a High School Diploma or GED and 12 months experience working with preschool aged children in a play oriented learning or equivalent environment. Must currently be enrolled in a CDA or equivalent training or stackable credit program. Requires completion of CDA or equivalent in early childhood education within 24 months of original hire date as an ECE Assistant with emphasis on pre-school aged children. Requires a valid driver’s license and be eligible for the Tribes insurance.  Requires a Class C CDL with Passenger and Student Endorsement.  Pediatric First Aid and CPR Certificate, Health Clearance, TB Test, and Food Handlers Card must be completed within 3 weeks of hire.
