Introduction

A seasonal position as a Seasonal Resource Assistant is available with the Forestry Division at Eastern District Headquarters, with some work required at the DEEP Headquarters in Hartford. Seasonal Resource Assistant Length of position: Position is 1,040 hours in duration, not to exceed one year. Schedule is first shift, Monday-Friday, up to 40 hours a week as workload dictates. Valid driver’s license is required. Roles and responsibilities include: This position may require work in both the Western and Eastern Districts and may require statewide travel. Working in the Forest Protection Program, under direction of the Forest Protection Supervisor. Assisting the Fire Supervisor and Forest Protection Staff in programmatic responsibilities including collection, compilation, and reporting of wildfire statistics data, as well as inventory of program fire equipment. The position will provide administrative support to the Connecticut Interstate Fire Crew, the Dry Hydrant grant program, and the Volunteer Fire Assistance grant program as needed, and other programmatic duties as directed. If interested and qualified, there may be opportunities for wildland fire suppression and prescribed burn experience. Limited opportunities for wildland fire training available.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, as a limited duration employee, performs one or more of a variety of tasks and assigned duties of a seasonal nature.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Ability to follow instructions.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Candidate should possess interpersonal skills, oral and written communication skills, organizational skills, and computer skills. Proficiency in GIS Arc Map is a plus.  Proficiency in Excel, Access, and PowerPoint preferred.  Ability to work independently.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Incumbents in this class who are assigned as supervisors of small recreational units will perform emergency first aid as needed and will be required to obtain and retain a Basic First Aid Certificate.  Incumbents in this class may be required for certain positions to meet any of the following: Proof of possession of a valid Motor Vehicle Operator license. Possession of a valid license to apply pesticides. College training in a specific field. Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification may be required by specific State facilities. Incumbents performing lifeguard services must have and retain an American Red Cross (ARC) Lifeguarding Certification (includes CPR for the Professional Rescuer and Basic First Aid). An EMT or MRT certification may be substituted for the CPR and First Aid requirements.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Incumbents in this class must possess and maintain adequate physical strength and stamina to perform the duties of the class.

2. Incumbents performing lifeguard services must be able to demonstrate American Red Cross (ARC) waterfront lifeguarding swimming skills.
