Full-time City employees will receive preference in the following order: major division first, then department, then all other full-time City employees. Part-time/year-round City employees will receive preference next. If there are no qualified full-time City employees or part-time/year-round City employees, external applicants will then be considered.

This job classification has been designated as a safety sensitive job classification in accordance with the Oklahoma Medical Marijuana and Patient Protection Act, 63 O.S., § 427.1 et seq., (OSCN 2019), effective August 29, 2019. This means employees in this job classification can be subject to disciplinary action up to and including termination if they test positive for marijuana components or metabolites, even if they possess a medical marijuana license.

JOB SUMMARY

This classification is located in various departments throughout the City of Oklahoma City. This posting will be used to fill a current vacancy in the Building Management Division of the General Services Department. However, an eligibility list will be established or supplemented for filling future vacancies, including vacancies in other departments, per provisions of the AFSCME collective bargaining agreement. Journeyman level skills and knowledge are required prior to assuming the duties of the position. Essential job functions include: maintenance and repair of various electrical systems; inspection and testing of facilities and equipment; cleaning and repair and/or replacement of dirty or worn parts; tracing and repairing electrical malfunctions; and installing new wiring, equipment, controls, lights, etc. Included in the Electrician's tasks are planning for the most feasible installations, compilation and computation of cost estimates, and possibly, preparing sketches indicating proposed improvements. The Electrician may also be required to supervise and direct the work of other workers. Supervision received is of a limited nature and the employee in this classification must assume responsibility for work performed. Due to direct occupational health, safety and environmental concerns associated with performing both routine and non-routine operations, maintenance, and production tasks, Electrician is a safety sensitive classification. In these regards, current and prospective employees are required to meet and maintain specific physical standards and guidelines.

VETERANS PREFERENCE

Honorably discharged veterans of the United States Active Duty Armed Forces, National Guard, and Reserve Forces who are not currently employed full-time by the City of Oklahoma City and who meet the qualifications for the position shall be given preference. To receive preference, veterans must submit verification of honorable discharge from the United States military service (Department of Defense Form DD214 or NGB Form 22) prior to the closing date of the vacancy announcement.

Willingness to exercise established safety and environmental health precautions for the work performed. Possession of a valid Oklahoma State and Oklahoma City Journeyman Wireman's License. Possession of a valid driver license (Operator).

WORKING CONDITIONS 

Inside and outside; exposed to heat, cold, humidity, rain, etc. May work on or around slippery surfaces caused by rained, snowed, mud, etc. Subject to working near moving machinery and equipment, such as, power tools, vehicles in motion, construction equipment, aircraft, etc. Subject to working in confined space and cramped positions with limited means of entry or exit. Exposed to steady and loud noises from machinery and equipment. Exposed to large amounts of dust when performing work at construction sites. Possibility of severe electrical shock when working on or around electrical connections and equipment. Subject to climbing portable or fixed ladders and working on scaffolding, ladders or floors with no surrounding walls or rails at heights up to 45 ft. above ground level to work on tanks, platforms, grating and equipment. Subject to working at heights from 180 to 200 feet when repairing/replacing lights on water towers (Water Department Only). Subject to climbing down portable or fixed ladders to depths of 45 ft. when working on equipment below ground level. Subject to frequent local travel on a daily basis to and from job sites. May work irregular hours, including weekends, holidays and be on 24-hour call. 

Note: Typical City employee working hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. However, working hours vary (may require work to begin before 8:00 a.m. and/or end beyond 5:00 p.m., and/or may require work on weekends and holidays), and are subject to change, based on the duties and location of the position and the business needs of the assigned work unit/department.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS 

Extent flexibility, mobility, and balance enough to bend, twist, and reach out when performing activities such as climbing or working from a ladder to test, replace, or repair electrical connections. Arm-hand steadiness, manual dexterity, and finger dexterity enough to use manual and power tools to perform tasks such as removing panels, covers, etc. to make equipment repairs. Near vision enough to read information media such as blueprints, schematics, wiring diagrams, code books, equipment labels, etc. Visual color discrimination enough to perform duties such as checking the installation of color-coded wires. Speech and hearing enough to communicate clearly and distinctly in person, by two-way radio, and by telephone. Pulmonary function sufficient to use a self-contained breathing apparatus and cartridge respirator (Water Department Only). Maximum body mass, including equipment weighing up to 30 lbs., not to exceed 310 lbs.

OTHER DETAILS

Note: All applicants considered for employment must be able to pass a respirator fit and cardiopulmonary test. Successful applicants must be able to utilize all safety equipment within its design capacities. (Examples: Fall protection/arrest systems, ladders/lifts, confined space entry gear, etc.).

Note: An eligibility list will be established from this posting consisting of applicants who receive a score of 70 percent or better. Multiple selection procedures may be utilized; a minimum of 70 percent or better will be required on each; and the results of multiple selection procedures will be equally weighted. The eligibility list will be in effect for 180 days from the date of the final selection procedure and will be used to fill future vacancies.

Pay Method: City employees are required to receive pay electronically, either via direct deposit or pay card.

Background Investigation, Drug Testing, Physical Examination: Upon a conditional offer of employment/acceptance of position, the City of Oklahoma City will conduct a criminal history background check for external applicants. Applicants will be provided contact information for any third-party reporting agencies used to collect background information in connection with conditional offers of employment.

Additionally, employees in this job classification must complete Level 4 Security Awareness Training and pass an online certification test.
