For Anchorage, AK:
The selectee will be entitled to a cost-of-living allowance of 1.69% in addition to the basic salary.
For Hilo, HI: The selectee will be entitled to a cost-of-living allowance of 3.15% in addition to the basic salary.

There are three vacancies; however, this announcement may be used to fill additional vacancies if they become available.

As a Physical Science Technician within the Volcano Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:

Maintains existing volcano monitoring networks of analog/digital equipment and relay stations at USGS Volcano Science Center volcano observatories. Keeps proper records, including, but not limited to, station maintenance histories, field files, landowner information, and equipment/station databases. Installs, configures, diagnoses, and performs basic repairs of electronic geophysical station components including seismometers, infrasound, meteorological, and GNSS sensors, analog and digital dataloggers, complex power systems, satellite equipment, cellular modems, grounding, GPS systems, IP links, and computer networking equipment. Assists in the development of methods and procedures for the use of test equipment and computer systems to detect, troubleshoot, and fix problems. Installation requires configuration of computer-based dataloggers and radio/telemetry/networking equipment, integration with existing systems, and validation of the acquired data. Assists in the planning, design, and fabrication of electronic and mechanical systems as part of the installation of new monitoring stations, relay stations, and the relocation or upgrade of existing stations. Works with scientists/engineers and other technicians from USGS and other institutions on field response to volcanic unrest and eruptions. Conducts overall logistical support to ensure the success of field operations. Contacts Federal, State, local and private agencies or property owners to obtain access for installing monitoring stations. Physical Demand:
Laboratory work requires prolonged periods of standing and manual dexterity to operate equipment. Field work requires moderate to strenuous activities such as walking, bending and standing for long periods of time in uncomfortable weather, and driving a vehicle.

Work Environment:
Field work involves moderate risks and discomforts, exposure to other conditions such as rain, cold/hot weather, and rapidly running or icy streams and rivers. Work in environments where a scarce resource (such as a helicopter) must be shared by several groups. Laboratory work involves exposure to moderate risks or discomforts such as high levels of noise and vibration, dust, grease, exposed moving parts of machinery, or irritant fumes and chemicals. Work requires protective clothing, gear, and observance of safety precautions.

For GS-08:

Applicants must meet one of the following to qualify for the GS-08 level:

One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 level in the Federal service that is in or related to the duties of this position. Specialized experience may include work in the fields of astronomy, physics, geophysics, chemistry, hydrology, engineering, electronics, geology, and oceanography if it equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position.

Examples of GS-7 level work: 1) Applies experience in accomplishing the work. Develops new procedures and techniques for more conventional use by others, such as utilization of complex equipment. Applies physical science methodologies and techniques; 2) Receives general instructions as to timeframes, anticipated technical problems, and possible sources of additional guidance. Written guides are available but do contain gaps and deviations where the technician is expected to decide possible alternatives. Work is rarely checked in progress but is checked for adequacy and accuracy at end of assignment or phase. Methods are fairly well established; makes procedural readjustments; selects auxiliary equipment and methods due to sample size, limitations of equipment, etc. Applies skill and knowledge in gathering significant data. Analyzes, evaluates consolidates and reports findings. Uses a large number of delicate and exacting steps and/or elaborate instruments; 3) Possesses long-term experience and/or additional education/training which results in being well versed in technical work. Often called upon to act as a "troubleshooter" in the solution of technical problems. Makes some decisions without guidance.

**OR applicants may substitute successful completion of 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education (36 semester hours, 54 quarter hours or the equivalent) leading to a master's degree or possession of a master's degree in the physical sciences or other field of study directly related to the work of this position for the required 1 year of specialized experience if it provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work of this position.

**OR applicants may substitute a combination of appropriate specialized experience (as described above) and appropriate graduate level education (as described above) that is beyond the first 1 1/2 years of progressive graduate study to meet the qualification requirements.
