Job Summary/Basic Functions

The Peer Recovery Specialist is responsible for helping to create a diverse, positive, and inclusive recovery community on our campus where individuals are empowered to ask for help, to receive support from other students in recovery, to intervene with empathy when they notice someone struggling with alcohol or other drug use, and to respect recovery by offering encouragement and celebrating success. The Peer Recovery Specialist will promote well-being by helping to develop, implement, monitor, and evaluate UMW's recovery support initiatives. These initiatives are designed to engage and empower people in recovery or considering recovery, as well as recovery allies. The Peer Recovery Specialist will focus on sustaining recovery on our campus through being a facilitator, mentor, educator. Also, they will connect students to appropriate on- and off-campus clinical providers when necessary.

Required Experience:

Experience collaborating, volunteering, or working with recovery community organizations

Additional Considerations:

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION
Certified Substance Abuse Counselor (CSAC or CSAC-A), or Certified Peer Recovery Support Specialist (CPRSS) certification); or completed training as a Peer Recovery Specialist (PRS), but not yet certified.

Understanding of student development issues, emerging needs, and interests.

EDUCATION
Master of Public Health (MPH), Master of Social Work (MSW), or a Master's degree in Higher Education Administration, Counseling, or a closely-related field of study.

EXPERIENCE
Experience in a collegiate recovery community as a staff member, intern, or member; Experience planning, implementing, and evaluating health promotion or recovery support initiatives in a college setting. Lived experience as an individual in recovery.
