Position Description

Safely performs journeyperson level tasks in the fabrication, construction, maintenance, alteration and repair of fixtures, equipment, structures, buildings, and built-in components for Texas Tech facilities. Works under general supervision with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

Major/Essential Functions

  • Performs component replacement/repairs for refrigeration equipment and/or HVAC systems, and the associated distribution network to include: compressors, condensers, evaporators and associated valving.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on refrigeration, exhaust, ventilation, and air production related equipment. Inspects, calibrates, and tests refrigeration system devices. Performs CFC recovery and recycling and document actions for various refrigerants.
  • Maintains gas furnaces. Inspects, tests, cleans, and repairs systems for safe and efficient operation. Adjusts or replaces electrical and gas controls as required. Maintains air compressors required to supply compressed air for research labs.
  • Performs recurring maintenance of mechanical/equipment rooms and installed equipment to include: air handlers, pumps, pipes, and insulation. Performs service as required on air handlers.
  • Assists Tradesperson Leader in inspecting all job assignments.
  • Assists Tradesperson Leader in monitoring and supervising work site operation.
  • Assists Tradesperson Leader in maintaining records of materials and labor expended for each job assignment.
  • Assists Tradesperson Leader in assessing job materials requirements and prepares requisition for materials from supply warehouse or vendor.
  • Maintains vehicle, tools, equipment, and materials in an orderly and safe condition. Operates vehicles including pickups, trucks, and vans. Secures vehicle, equipment, and areas of operation.
  • Provides after-hours overtime work as required. Participates in emergency callback roster on a rotating basis.

Minimum Hire Rate

Compensation will be based on the knowledge, skills, abilities, and defined years of experience to align with the appropriate career levels for the Tradesperson specialty in the Operations Division Facilities Maintenance Career Plan.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Training and experience as pneumatic and temperature control technician.
  • Ability to calibrate and test pneumatic and electronic temperature control devices.

Required Qualifications

Proficiency in written and mathematical skills as may be reflected in the completion of high school or equivalent. Must have a valid driver's license and must be insurable to operate TTU vehicles.
