Designs, develops, and analyzes components utilized in nuclear applications and nuclear non-proliferation such as reactor fuel, reactor cores, radiation shielding, and instrumentation. Researches and develops analytical methods and technologies supporting all aspects of the nuclear fuel cycle including R&D activities related to storage, transportation, and disposal of used nuclear fuel and high-level radioactive waste and long-term performance of waste forms. Supports nuclear regulatory work, risk-informed nuclear regulatory analysis, and probabilistic risk analysis. Addresses facility and process safety needs, principally in the area of nuclear-related construction, operation, and decommissioning. Development and application of radioactive materials, radioactive isotopes, and radiation generating devices. Studies the effects of interactions of radiation with materials including biological effects. Researches, evaluates, and controls health hazards to permit the safe use of ionizing radiation. Investigates principles by which radiation interacts with matter and living systems. Studies environmental levels of radioactivity and the effects of radiation on biological systems on earth and in space. Applies knowledge of radiation physics, health physics, biology, instrumentation, and computational modeling in laboratory and field settings to ensure that radiation exposure to researchers, students, industrial workers, patients, and the public is minimized and in compliance with regulations.


Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

BS/BA and 7+ years of relevant experience -OR- MS/MA and 5+ years of relevant experience -OR- PhD with 3+ year of relevant experience

Preferred Qualifications:

PhD in nuclear engineering, applied mathematics, or related field with significant experience with research in nuclear security. Support Project Managers, PNNL Sectors, and sponsors as a subject matter expert to bring PNNL technologies and scientific capabilities to bear on National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) missions. Work on complex science and engineering topics where analysis of unique situations and data requires and in-depth evaluation and assessment of a variety of dynamic factors. Exercise judgement in selecting strategy approaches, methods, techniques, and criteria that will generate the optimum solution and results. Maintain an understanding of and knowledge of key project issues and initiatives that will allow for proposing improvements and expanding the project portfolio. Build and lead diverse technical teams to tackle unique nuclear security mission challenges. Manage projects and programs with diverse technical scope and dynamic schedule and cost constraints. Advise the Nuclear Stockpile Partnerships Sector on emerging issues related to NNSA missions.

Recommend innovative designs and strategies that can be applied to meet project goals. Author technical white papers, technical documentation, invention reports and journal articles describing related unclassified technological advances in assigned areas of expertise.

Facilitate collaboration among PNNL and external teams. Frequent communication with project points of contact is expected and required with the ability to effectively interface with others to develop solutions and capabilities that will accomplish project missions. This position may require occasional travel to project sponsors, other national laboratories, and industry partners. The position will require engineering work on non-sensitive, sensitive, and classified information as required by the assigned project topics. The incumbent must demonstrate an ability to manage sensitive information while influencing positive outcomes. The person in this position must recognize and accept that they will be working in technical areas associated with the National Security of the United States. Significant research in computational methods for neutronics and radiation transport, novel approaches to analyzing diagnostic data from dynamic materials experiments, and advanced imaging. Experience managing scientific and technical staff, projects, and programs. Demonstrated experience interfacing with Department of Energy or National Nuclear Security Administration programs. Outstanding written and oral communications, with substantial evidence of detailed technical and science writing conveying complex information accurately. Ability to build technical teams and develop technical solutions to a variety of problems with highly complex scope.
