Position Summary & Responsibilities:

Introduction

We are looking for a detailed and conscientious Investment Accountant to support out Fiscal Services and Investment Divisions. The Investment Accountant assists with the maintenance of transactions and reconciliation of various asset types. Transactions must be reviewed to ensure that generally accepted accounting principles have been applied. It is crucial that the System’s investment activity is accurately reflected. This position is also responsible for the generation of various reports, some of which are included in the Retirement System’s Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR).

Essential Responsibilities

Responsible for the day-to-day operation of all investment related expenses in the SMART accounting system. Responsibilities include monitoring and updating list of vendors, fees, and expense schedules according to each contract, auditing and reviewing purchase requisitions, and recording and monitoring approximately $42 million in expenses annually.

Responsible for verifying expenses are in accordance with the contract, System policy, pertinent laws, and regulations. Develops and maintains a data base system to track vendors, expenses, and invoices from budget to receipt, through approval and payment process. Responsible for maintaining records and running reports from the custodial bank in accordance with GAAP.

Using multiple reports, verifies correct payments and posting of expenses. Responsible for the posting the daily cash wire between the state and custodian bank. Responsible for monthly reconciliation of payments and expenses between SMART, custodial bank and corporate accounting unit.

Assist Investment Accountants and Investment Controller with fiscal year closing and reports. Compiles financial data necessary to develop departmental and agency budgets. Works with the Investment Controller to develop budget forecast for all investment related expenses and reviews fund controls and departmental/agency budgets to ensure positive balances.

Responsible for daily report development to monitor cash activity at the custodian bank and if rebalances are necessary, process the needed transfers for proper cash balances to meet the daily needs of the System.

Completes reports as directed for the Annual Report (ACFR), as well as other financial reports as required by the legislature, state, auditors, and KPERS’ administration/Board of Trustees. Also monitors and reports monthly cash flow impacts, class action posting, and other items as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education Required

An undergraduate degree in accounting or finance, with a minimum of 24 semester hours in accounting from an accredited college or university is required.

Experience Required

Three years of advanced accounting experience. Education may be substituted for experience as determined relevant by the agency.

Skills and Abilities

Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office (i.e., Excel, Word, Access). Proficient working with computer record systems for integration and accounting control. Knowledge of General Ledger system structure and maintenance. Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles, practices, and standards. Ability to understand complicated and technical instructions and guidelines. Ability to interpret complex rules and requirements and apply independent judgment. Ability to apply analytical thought and knowledge of accounting principles. Ability to be extremely detail oriented. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Ability to maintain positive working relationships. Ability to work effectively within a team. Commitment to excellent customer service.
