Duties
As a Maintenance Mechanic your duties will include but are not limited to the following:
Completes repairs, troubleshooting, testing that can be accomplished by removing, replacing, tightening, splicing, soldering, and insulating defective wiring, controls, equipment, and fixtures such as broken and bare wiring, burned out switches and relays, loose connections and fittings, damaged light fixtures, and poorly operating thermostats. May install or repair electrical systems incident to the construction or maintenance or family housing units, buildings, quarters, offices, or shops; or perform limited assignments in the installation or repair of complex industrial electrical systems. Locates broken, worn, damaged, or poorly operating wiring, fixtures, controls, and equipment through visual check or through use of a small variety of test equipment, for example, test lamps, voltage testers, ammeters, and polarity testers. Completes needed repairs to installed systems, and rearrange and hook up items such as outlets, switches, light fixtures, regulators, and circuit breakers. Locates leaks and determines their cause and extent of damage. They select the work method to follow appropriate repairs and determine roofing materials and accessories to be utilized. These accessories may include; shingles, roofing felt, and asphalt. They install new roofs, including metal flashing, gutters, and other roofing accessories, and repair or replace sheathing, boards, beams, and joists. Constructs, installs, repairs, and modifies wood and wood substitute structures and items requiring close tolerance fit and structural soundness. They construct and repair a wide variety of structural items such as building frames, rafters, concrete forms, walls, staircases, door and window frames, interior and exterior trim, and miscellaneous items such as workbenches, counter tops, bookcases, equipment cabinets, computer consoles, and items requiring limited decorative trim and molding. They also set up and operate a wide variety of wood working machines and tools. They assemble items with a variety of joining techniques such as miters, rabbets, dados, biscuit, and mortise and tenon, and use glues and adhesives to secure wood pieces, veneers, and counter tops. They use wood, metal, and various composite materials when installing or replacing interior partitions, flooring, panels, suspended ceilings, counter tops, and moldings. They interpret drawings, blueprints, and specifications independently, and determine the layout and work sequences and types of lumber or special related materials. Plan and carry out projects from initial layout to completion. Conducts maintenance on motor vehicles replace sensors, water pumps, spark plugs, brake shoes, mufflers, radiator caps, condensers, engine gaskets, a variety of belts and hoses, and complete assemblies such as removing old engines and replacing them with new engines. Clean or replace filters, screens, battery cables and clamps, engine components, and heating and cooling devices. In addition, service and check air conditioning systems including purging and recharging systems, flushing radiators and replacing anti-freeze solutions, and aligning front ends of cars and trucks. Operates a variety of types of heavy equipment to push, pull, pile, or load materials such as sand, gravel and earth while excavating, backfilling, grading, or leveling earth to specifications on such projects like repairing and breaking new ground for trails, roads, canals, tunnels, or construction sites. Heavy equipment may include: bulldozers, excavators, road graders, skid steers, backhoes, wheeled and tracked loaders, backhoes, wheeled equipment/vehicles, and specialized equipment. Implements may include: mowers, cutter bars, drum choppers, augers, plows, harrows, sprayers, discs, and etc. Operates motor vehicles including: tractor trailers, truck and trailer combination, platform trucks, passenger buses, van trucks, fuel trucks, stake trucks, and dump trucks which typically have an approximate gross vehicle weight of more than 14,400 kilograms (32,000 pounds) but not to include special permit hauling. This may include hauling non-conforming cargo. A Commercial Driver's License (CDL (Class A)) is required to operate these vehicles and to transport heavy equipment between refuges. Operators must be able to couple / uncouple vehicles and connect and disconnect the air brakes and electrical lines.

Commercial Driver's License: Duties of this position require the employee to obtain and maintain a valid Class B State Commercial Drivers License (CDL) within 6 months of employment to operate various vehicles and equipment. Uniform: Official U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service uniform may be required. Probationary Period: Selectees may be required to successfully complete a probationary period. Certifications: Incumbent will be required to maintain several Operator certifications, including but not limited to Heavy Equipment, Forklift, and Chainsaw. Other: Required to obtain and maintain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) within 6 months of employment. Other: Required to obtain and maintain a Merchant Mariner Document (MMD) within 6 months of employment. Individuals assigned male at birth after 12-31-59 must be registered for the Selective Service. Qualifications
By the closing date of this announcement, you must meet the requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Handbook X118C, Job Qualification System for Trades and Labor Occupation.Although no specific amount of experience, education or training is required, applicants must meet a minimum level of ability in relation to the position and the Assessment Questionnaire in order to be rated qualified for consideration. To be qualified candidates must meet any screen out element(s) listed at an "acceptable" level, and must achieve an average rating of at least "acceptable" on all of the elements. Only education, training, or experience acquired before the closing date of this announcement will be considered.
SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements.
The screen out element for this position is: The ability to do the work of a Maintenance Mechanic without more than normal supervision.
The Job elements you will be evaluated on for this position are Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, etc. Knowledge of Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic) Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Skill in Operation of Motor Vehicles Ability To Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprinting reading) Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Education
There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.
