Introduction

The centerpiece of Killens Pond State Park, conveniently located in central Delaware, is the 66-acre millpond, which was established in the late 1700s. Before the pond was created, the Murderkill River and surrounding hardwood forest were sites of several Native American homes and hunting camps.

Summary Statement

A variety of seasonal park positions may be available at Killens Pond State Park, which may include the following:

1. Park Interpreter -$14.50 : this position assists with environmental interpretive programs that will increase the public’s awareness of their surrounding environment. Also responsible for daily delivery of programming and leading tours of the Nature Center which include a collection of native reptiles and amphibians.

2. Summer Camp Director-$17.00/Assistant Director- $15.00 : responsible for planning lessons, coordinating activities and work weekly themed summer adventure camps at Killens Pond State Park.

Applicants must be available to work weekends, evenings, and holidays as scheduled.

Essential Functions

·Lead school and public environmental programs tied to State standards to increase awareness and understanding of Delaware’s natural resources.

·Help coordinate and implement spring and summer day camps at Killens Pond State Park.

·Develop and maintain exhibits, park bulletin boards and educational material.

·Provide general customer service and park information to visitors.

·Plan, organize and conduct interpretive walks and tours.

·Provide live animal care and handling.

·Perform custodial services in restrooms, offices and other rooms in the Nature Center.

·Set-up, monitor and provide clean-up support for park programs and special events.

·Must demonstrate responsibility, dependability and good communication skills.

·Maintain a positive attitude.

·Other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

Park Interpreter

1.Experience working with children and young adults such as babysitting, academic/athletic tutoring, camp counselor, youth volunteer, classroom assistant or education teacher.

2.Knowledge of historical, natural, cultural resources or parks and recreation.

3.Knowledge of public speaking or interpretation.

4.Possession of a valid driver’s license (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).

Camp Director/Assistant Director

1.Must be at least 20 years of age.

2.One-year experience working in a camp program for children or young adults.

3.One-year experience in supervising groups, staff or volunteers.

4.Knowledge of various recreational activities such as hiking, mountain biking, boating, rock climbing or swimming.

5.Knowledge of local plants, animals or history.

6.Possession of a valid driver’s license (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).
