Responsibilities



The successful applicant will be expected to make significant technical contributions. The contributions should affect the direction of research teams in a given technical area and result in a recognizable
signature for the incumbent at PNNL. The incumbent will be responsible to project managers for the execution of work scope and for producing high quality technical deliverables; and to line management
for helping build science and technology capability. Will be expected to build technical networks across the ACAI group and interact at the Nuclear, Chemical, and Biological Technologies (NCBT) division level. The position will execute research tasks independently and recommend technical approaches within multi-disciplinary teams to produce cutting-edge research. The incumbent is expected to be aware of research going on at the national and international level that affects their project scope, and possess the ability to develop and maintain skills consistent with state-of-the-art. The incumbent will manage tasks and or projects to the positive outcome of milestone level activities and provide significant assistance with preparing project deliverables. Duties include being active in professional activities such as presenting technical results at regional or national level conferences, and at project working group meetings. Will participate in business development activities; and mentors and supports peers and junior staff in technical growth. The top candidate will have a growing record of independent contributions to research programs and possess the ability to interact with dynamic, multi-disciplinary teams.


Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

BS/BA and 2 years of relevant experience -OR- MS/MA -OR- PhD

Preferred Qualifications:

Degree in Analytical Chemistry, Geochemistry, Radiochemistry, Nuclear Engineering, or related technical field. Experience working with chemicals and dispersible radioactive materials in a laboratory setting is required. Experience handling radioactive materials and performing separations and chemical/instrumental analysis on these materials including molecular and chemical analytical techniques in support of characterization of nuclear or radioactive particles and debris is especially desired. Must have strong written and oral communication skills and the ability to work both with minimal supervision and within teams. The top candidate must have excellent attention to detail and a demonstrated ability for meticulous, reproducible work and documentation. Technical Expertise: Position requires technical contributions to projects in national and homeland security, nuclear nonproliferation, nuclear material detection and characterization, environmental
monitoring. Level of Responsibility: independent contributor to projects and/or major project tasks.
Hazardous Working Conditions/Environment

The position is expected to be onsite because of the hands on nature of working with instruments and in the laboratory.


Additional Information

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a federal security clearance.

Requirements: 

U.S. Citizenship Background Investigation: Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter in accordance with 10 CFR 710, Appendix B. Drug Testing: All Security Clearance positions are Testing Designated Positions, which means that the candidate selected is subject to pre-employment and random drug testing. In addition, applicants must be able to demonstrate non-use of illegal drugs, including marijuana, for the 12 consecutive months preceding completion of the requisite Questionnaire for National Security Positions (QNSP). 

Note: Applicants will be considered ineligible for security clearance processing by the U.S. Department of Energy until non-use of illegal drugs, including marijuana, for 12 months can be demonstrated.


Testing Designated Position

This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP). The candidate selected for this position will be subject to pre-employment and random drug testing for illegal drugs, including marijuana, consistent with the Controlled Substances Act and the PNNL Workplace Substance Abuse Program.
