Richland, United States Pacific Northwest National Laboratory Full time

Responsibilities

Conducts research and development activities using the theories and principles of physics. Investigates the structure and behavior of matter, the generation of energy, and the interaction between matter and energy. Scales of investigation range from sub-atomic particles to complex, large-scale systems. Specific research areas range from the structure and properties of matter; optical, acoustic and electromagnetic system design; nuclear, particle, electromagnetic and acoustic phenomena; and the properties of matter under interrogation or impingement from all these forms of energy. Physicists may design, model, prototype, construct, and operate measurement and/or detection systems. Physicists also develop and advance detection technology and detector systems deployed internationally and domestically. Physicists may design, model, prototype, construct, and operate radiation measurement and/or detection systems. Physicist routinely engage in complex, data-intensive analysis. The successful candidate will support radiation spectroscopy operations at PNNL, including alpha spectroscopy, gas proportional counting, liquid scintillation counting, gamma spectroscopy, low energy photon spectroscopy, and neutron detection and field characterization. This includes: operation and maintenance of the operational count laboratories, including the low-background underground count lab housed in an ISO 6 class 1K clean room, instrument procurement and installation, radiometric data analysis and reporting; support of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty Organization’s (CTBTO) International Monitoring System (IMS) laboratory RL16, assisting and leading design and commissioning of unique, application driven radiometric detection systems. Some examples of relevant activities include spatially and energy resolved gamma scanning of ion exchange columns and spent fuel rods, commissioning of multi-detector arrays, and design and sourcing of low background materials to construct ultra-low background detection systems, modeling and simulation of cosmic veto, Compton suppression, and coincident detection, and reactor neutron dosimetry measurements for material damage calculations commonly done for research reactor experiments (e.g., HFIR and ATR), and fundamental nuclear physics measurements like nuclear decay scheme measurements and fission yield studies. The successful candidate will investigate and publish measurements of nuclear structure, reactions, and properties of isotopes. They will design, model, construct, operate, and interpret measurements from application specific/custom detection systems. The successful candidate will provide capability operational support as a cognizant space manager of one or more of the count rooms and associated labs, and assist with material balance area responsibilities. Programmatic needs require off-shift work periodically.

Preferred Qualifications:

Degree in Physics, Nuclear Engineering, or closely related field. Experience in the operation and maintenance of radiation spectroscopy systems and count room operations, and/or Experience in the operation and maintenance of gamma spectroscopy systems, and analysis of gamma spectroscopy data, and/or Experience in the operation and maintenance of alpha spectroscopy and/or beta count and/or liquid scintillation and/or LEPS, and analysis and reporting of the associated data, and/or Experience using software such as Genie2000, APEX Gamma, APEX Alpha, APEX Alpha/Beta, C/C++, MS-SQL, PowerShell, and/or MS-DOS, and/or Experience in count room operations.
