Summary

What General Information Do I Need To Know About This Position?

The Government-wide direct hire authority for Biologist GS-0401 and Physical Sciences GS-1301 is being used to fill this position.

There is only one vacancy to be filled at any of the following locations: Lafayette, LA or Baton Rouge, LA. The location will be determined when a selection is made.

This is an interdisciplinary position that may be filled as a Biologist GS-0401 or Physical Scientist GS-1301.

Duties

Salary: $122,198 (Step 01) - $158,860 (Step 10);
NOTE: First time hires to the Federal Government are typically hired at the Step 01 .

As a Supervisory Biologist/Physical Scientist within the Wetland and Aquatic Research Center (WARC), some of your specific duties will include:

Coordinates with the Center Director and Deputy Director in the scientific, technical, and administrative direction for the branch and associated programmatic activities at the Center and Southeast Region level. This includes all research including data collection, and research programs, including those carried on in cooperation with local, State, and other Federal agencies. Responsible for defining problems, describing the scope and objectives needed to address the problem, and developing intermediate and long- range proposals aimed at addressing identified needs and issues. Responsible for planning, assigning, and reviewing work of personnel and the allocation and distribution of funds. Develops staffing plans; recommends selection of employees; provides guidance on work related issues; approves training; evaluates performance as a rating or reviewing official as well as edits and mentors RGE panel reviews; resolves internal problems; recommends awards; and effects or recommends disciplinary action. Coordinates with the WARC Director and other Branch Chiefs in identifying, stimulating, promoting, developing, mid maintaining programs of natural resource investigations and research in cooperation with local, state, and other Federal agencies. Oversees a regional, national and international complex program of science planning and coordination related to landscape research programs within the WARC. Directly engages with EMA senior leadership, program coordinators, and WARC senior leadership to identify broad areas of scientific focus, define science goals and objectives, develop, fund, and implement proposals, and maintain and expand the core science capabilities. Maintains close liaison with local, state, and federal officials responsible for the development and management of natural resources, advising them on science directions to support their management directions. Operating a government owned/leased vehicle as an incidental driver.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:
Travel to other offices (occasional) and to field (infrequent) locations is required. Field inspections may result in exposure to isolated and difficult terrain and weather conditions and involve use of boats on inland and coastal waters and on the Gulf of Mexico.

Individuals who have delinquent account balances from a previous Government charge card will be required to satisfy their existing obligation before a new card can be issued. A background investigation will be required for this position. Qualifications

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT FOR GS-0401 (BIOLOGIST) :
Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Biologist, all grade levels.

A. Degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.

B. Combination of education and experience--courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above (24 semester hours or the equivalent in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above. BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT FOR GS-1301 (PHYSICAL SCIENTIST) :
Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Physical Scientist, all grade levels.

A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours or the equivalent in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.

B. A combination of education and experience--education equivalent to one of the majors shown in "A" above (24 semester hours or the equivalent in physical science, engineering, or mathematics) that included at least 24 semester hours or the equivalent in physical science and/or related engineering science as described above, plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above. For GS-14:
In addition to the basic education requirements as stated above, applicants must have one year of specialized experience at or equal to the next lower grade level.

Examples of GS-13 level work may include: 1) leading research programs of substantial depth and/or breadth; this includes initiating, formulating, planning, and controlling of major biological or geographical research projects 2) analyzing and interpreting related project data with novel and obscure problems and publishing or preparing results of findings; 3) developing new or significantly modified research techniques, methods, or criteria; 4) providing advisory, planning, or reviewing services and represent as an authoritative source for other scientists and are often called upon to resolve sometimes controversial, uncertain and high impact ecological findings.

For examples 1-4, the work provided wide latitude for the exercise of independent judgment to perform scientific work of marked difficulty and responsibility.
