Job Description:
The Injury and Violence Epidemiologist III performs highly advanced research and epidemiological work in the area of Injury and Prevention in the Community Health Improvement Division. This position is located in Austin, Texas and is eligible to telework full-time.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Serves as the primary liaison on the data and data quality of programs and provides consultation, presentations, and troubleshooting.

• Develops and implements advanced epidemiologic investigations following new or standardized scientific policies/protocols.

• Oversees data abstraction, prepares data quality reports, and ensures data quality meets or exceeds defined criteria.

This position requires strong project management skills to organize major projects and meet deadlines and strong technical writing skills to communicate project and research information clearly and succinctly to state and federal agencies. Candidates must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external partners, work in a team environment, and feel comfortable making recommendations for program improvement to a variety of audiences. Essential Job Functions:
(30%) Develop and improve tools to enter death certificates into the National Violent Death Reporting System (NVDRS) and create Child Fatality Review Team (CFRT) case spreadsheets using SAS and monitors data quality and data reporting. Serves as the primary liaison on the data and data quality of the NVDRS and CFRT programs and provides consultation, presentations, and troubleshooting.

(30%) Develops and implements advanced epidemiologic investigations collecting, analyzing, and evaluating data and communicating results. Prepares reports and infographics on violent deaths and child fatalities and creates presentations for external stakeholders and to share at conferences. Analyzes data for the CFRT biennial report that is submitted to the legislature on even numbered years.

(20%) Develops evaluation plan and oversees quality of TVDRS data abstraction. Prepares and shares data quality reports with abstraction staff and assists staff to ensure data quality meets/exceeds the criteria defined by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Provides direction to staff to identify and resolve barriers in data quality.

(10%) Supports injury prevention unit data analyses and provides data support as needed. Cross trains in fatal and non-fatal drug poisoning, motor vehicle crash injuries, EMS and trauma data analyses, and other topics.

(10%) Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agency’s obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location. Knowledge Skills Abilities:
Knowledge of principles and methods of epidemiology, scientific methods, data abstraction, and statistical concepts and methods and their application to surveillance and research

Skill in analyzing large sets, the use of computer software package applications (SAS), and in the development of procedures to monitor and evaluate progress in achieving project objectives.

Ability to develop and effectively deliver training and technical assistance about research/data methods and procedures, to facilitate meeting agendas, and to interpret complex statistical data to develop measuring instruments with respect to reliability, relevance, and validity.
