Responsibilities:
- Flexible staffing arrangement for Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) seeking additional hours, no more than an average of 29 hours per week.
- Provides evidence-based nursing care utilizing the nursing process, principles, practices and techniques of general nursing care as determined by Standards of Practice under the direction of a Registered Nurse.
- Screens for sick calls, administers medications and provides first aid and basic life support to patients and employees as needed.
- Maintains open lines of communication with security and treatment staff while providing input and feedback to assist the facility provider in organizing a treatment plan.
- Records all pertinent information into the medical record.
- Interfaces with other departments as needed.
- Promotes continued competence through education/certification with a focus on correctional nursing.
- Nurses must have the ability to work hours, days, and locations as assigned along with being capable and available to provide coverage as needed to meet institutional needs.
Organizational Objective:
- Provide total health care to offenders (routine, chronic and emergent care), maintaining continuity of care from admission to discharge in a correctional facility.
- Safe medication administration following DOC policy.
- Provide employee health services in accordance with policy.
- Follows operational policies/procedures, Health Services guidelines/policies, ACA standards of care, and Board of Health professionals’ scope of practice.
Qualifications:
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
- Must possess and maintain a valid unrestricted Virginia LPN license issued by the board of nursing or a multi-state compact license (if you are a recent graduate of a nursing program in VA and not licensed, the NCLEX-PN exam must be scheduled at the time of application).
- Demonstrated ability to screen complaints of physical ailments and refer necessary cases to other medical professionals.
- Experience in carrying out provider’s orders in applying treatments.
- Maintaining appropriate documentation.
- Certified Basic Life Support (BLS) for health care providers with current certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) is required upon hire.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
Additional Considerations:
- Experience working in a Corrections or Law enforcement environment.
- Experience or related training in the delivery of general nursing and emergency medical care.
