Responsibilities



The primary purpose of the Software Quality Engineer (QE) role at PNNL is to support Science and Technology (S&T) projects and Management & Operations (M&O) programs in establishing robust software quality assurance processes and practices aligned with PNNL’s Software Quality Assurance (SQA) Program, regulatory commitments and overall expectations.

The following is an overview of responsibilities but should not be considered a comprehensive list:

Drives execution of PNNL’s next generation SQA Program and processes. Perform regular project reviews, process definition, process implementation, process training, process improvement and drive project software teams to ensure quality is integrated into software development. Author SQA guidelines, processes, templates, and best practice documentation to seamlessly integrate SQA standards and policies. Translate SQA requirements to scientific staff. Well-developed understanding of applying nuclear quality assurance and the requirements specific to qualifying Safety Software. Applies a good working knowledge of the Software Development Life Cycle and Design Controls and other regulatory requirements and agencies as it relates to SQA. Well developed auditing skillset including what it takes to become an NQA-1 lead auditor (Current NQA-1 Lead Auditors encouraged to apply). Comfortable managing all quality aspects of the design control process: quality planning; verification and validation planning and execution; risk management; regulatory and compliance support. Uses comprehensive expertise to help improve and streamline the software quality or development process. Review complex software test cases/scripts and interprets/analyzes results to report, communicate, and work through issues with software engineers. Comprehensive knowledge in software development, software engineering, as well as test processes and methods. Partners with business and key stakeholders to drive continuous improvement in the Quality Organization and across PNNL.
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

BS/BA and 7 years of relevant experience -OR- MS/MA or higher and 5 years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

Professional license and/or certification in software quality. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated track record of leading others in solving problems, and a broad-based exposure to Software Quality Assurance.

In addition to subject matter expertise surrounding Software Quality Assurance, the successful Quality Engineer will have general knowledge of at least two to three of the bullets below with a passion to collaborate and help others be successful:

Experience working in a highly regulated environment/industry with a robust Environment, Health, Safety, and Quality (EHS&Q) culture. (e.g. nuclear, food, oil and gas, transportation, medical, pharmaceutical, aerospace, etc.). Experience working in a research and development environment where software is prototyped and developed. Experience and practice with any of the following: NQA-1, DOE Order 414.1D (safety software), 10 CFR 50 App B, 10 CFR Part 21, 10 CFR Part 71, and/or 10 CFR 830 requirements. Experience in quality program development, maintenance and implementation. Experience working in an agile software environment. Utilizes technical expertise and judgement to solve problems. Auditing and/or surveillance and reporting experience. Technical writing and composition skills matching processes to procedures. Quality Process/Workflow Mapping. Experience in Suspect Counterfeit Items (SCI) programs, processes, and execution. Statistics and Data Analytics: process modeling, trending, and background in data-driven decision making. Experience with developing Commercial Grade Dedication (CGD) plans while leading the necessary interactions from other team players (i.e. design engineers, process engineers, suppliers, etc.).

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a federal security clearance. 

Requirements:

Drug Testing: All Security Clearance positions are Testing Designated Positions, which means that the candidate selected is subject to pre-employment and random drug testing. In addition, applicants must be able to demonstrate non-use of illegal drugs, including marijuana, for the 12 consecutive months preceding completion of the requisite Questionnaire for National Security Positions (QNSP). 

Note: Applicants will be considered ineligible for security clearance processing by the U.S. Department of Energy until non-use of illegal drugs, including marijuana, for 12 months can be demonstrated.


Testing Designated Position

This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP). The candidate selected for this position will be subject to pre-employment and random drug testing for illegal drugs, including marijuana, consistent with the Controlled Substances Act and the PNNL Workplace Substance Abuse Program.
