Natchaug Hospital is Eastern Connecticuts leading provider for children, adolescents and adults with mental illness and substance abuse addictions. We offer a variety of programs including inpatient and outpatient behavioral health, residential treatment for court-involved teenage girls, geriatric services, clinical day treatment schools and chemical dependency services. Through our multi-site network of care, we constantly strive to meet its mission in helping people find their way while educating and empowering individuals to participate in their own care and recovery.

Job Summary

Accountable for using shared life experiences and recovery management techniques to engage, motivate, educate and mentor child/adolescent clients in achieving individualized goals for successful community living. The Recovery Support Specialist provides peer support which is a non-clinical role and does not involve treatment, assessment or evaluation activities. The duties are centered on mutuality and sharing common recovery perspective and language with the client. A Recovery Support Specialist is expected to act as coach and advocate, promoting the program value of autonomy, diversity and empowerment, with the knowledge and ability to link client to community-based supports and other resources.

  • Offer peer support to client both prior and subsequent to discharge. They act as a Peer Transition/Community connector for the client and is part of a centralized programmatic service providing observations to treatment teams.
  • Support and guide client pursuing goals related to employment, education, community involvement and the use of natural supports.
  • Support clients to secure information about resources relevant to their wellness, support clients in obtaining services that meet clients recovery needs, supports clients in dealing with internal and external stress, attends medical/clinical appointments with clients in a peer capacity, accompanies clients as a peers on volunteer opportunities and activities.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent and registered for Recovery University
  • At least 6 months experience as a Recovery Support Specialist Trainee
  • Recovery Support Specialist Certification
  • Knowledge of community support systems and resources
  • Wellness Recovery Action Planning and other recovery management techniques
  • Knowledge of the principles and procedures of psychiatric rehabilitation
  • Considerable interpersonal skill, oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to observe and redirect client behavior
