Research Assistant

Fixed Term Position EFT per fortnight Parkville Campus location

A 12 month parental leave replacement opportunity has been provided to conduct a large-scale national research program focussed on Malignant Peripheral Nerve Sheath Tumour Genomics in Neurofibromatosis 1 (MaGeN).

The Department of Neurosurgery, Royal Melbourne Hospital is an internationally recognised centre for clinical research, including investigator-driven medical trials and research.

The Department of Neurosurgery provides a comprehensive inpatient service for patients with neurosurgical diseases, with a clinical and referral service for patients with intracranial, spinal and peripheral nerve disorders requiring neurosurgical assessment and treatment. Each year, the Department treats over 13,000 outpatients and is involved in more than 1500 operations at The Royal Melbourne Hospital. There are 46 dedicated Neurosurgery beds together with patients in ICU, Trauma and Oncology.

Your new role:

Identify and consent suitable patients by liaising with and under the direction of the clinical team Collection, processing and storage of biobank specimen samples blood, tumour tissue Processing samples with various laboratory techniques, centrifugation, DNA and RNA extraction with kits Perform lab procedures such as Western blot, PCR where required Careful record and database keeping with respect for privacy principles Management of the laboratory environment, ordering, equipment, stores, OH&S requirements Participate in research group meetings, lab meetings, conferences and other research activities within the department, coordination of clinical research activities including consent documentation, patient tracking, database management. Work under the direction of the senior post-doc scientist as well as the clinician-researcher Principal Investigators on the project Other duties as directed

About you:

A Bachelor, Honours or Masters degree in Science, Bio-Science or related fields Excellent written and verbal communication skills Experience in conducting in-depth clinical data collection and interdisciplinary liaison at collaborating hospitals and departments Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team to achieve project goals and meet agreed deadlines. Strong computer skills with common applications such as Microsoft Word and Excel
