Job summary

The post holder will be joining an existing Archive team based at the UK Hydrographic Office (UKHO) in Taunton. The position requires the majority of time to be working from the Archive offices.

This post works closely with the Head of Archives and the Digital Archivist and will be responsible for advice and management of collections and their processes in its archives. A key role will be supporting the UKHO Archives move towards Archives Accreditation and becoming compliant with the UKHO�s statutory public record responsibilities while developing and delivering an online catalogue of Archive holdings and a new digital archive of UKHO records. They will work alongside the existing Digital Archivist whose main role is to work with the digital archive assets and be the master on-line catalogue.

This post is responsible for managing, preserving, and organising all materials such as paper and book documents, records, photographs, and similar materials according to established accredited standards. Their duties include developing and implementing strategies for long-term preservation and access the archives, organising collections and metadata, creating, and maintaining records, managing storage systems, and advising users on how to access and use archives.

The person will hold a pivotal role within the UKHO Archive and interact with key stakeholders across the organisation.

Office Attendance :

Full time office attendance is required for the first 3 months with allowance for up to 1-day working from home afterwards with management permission.

Job description

Working with the Head of Archives to manage access/cataloguing/policies and development of the collection.Responsible for managing, preserving, and organising all materials such as paper and book documents, records, photographs, and similar materials according to established accredited standards.Working with staff, accessioning, retrieving, digitising and manual handling will be required.Supervising and providing advice and guidance to staff on archival operations, policies, and proceduresSupporting Research, Conservation and Archive Teams in their work.Develop and implement strategies for long-term preservation and access the archives, organising collections and metadata, creating, and maintaining records, managing storage systems, and advising users on how to access and use archives.Maintain and improve the Archive indexes, catalogues, and reference material.List improvement. This includes holdings, indexes, and new datasets.Produce monthly reports as required and provide an annual analysis of trends.Support the development of a continual improvement culture and implementation of process changes as required

Person specification

Post-Graduate qualification in Archives and Records Management/Information Management / Archives AdministrationThorough knowledge of cataloguing requirements and standards.Detailed knowledge of archive preservation strategies, trends, and standards.Excellent Analytical skills: able to analyse information and make informed decisions about data.Excellent IT skills and a thorough understanding of cataloguing and digital archives systems and software.Excellent organisational skills: able to handle large volumes of data.Excellent communication skills: able to explain complex tasks to departments depositing data into the UKHO archives.Excellent literacy skills.Excellent Teamworking skills
