Position Summary:

Refrigeration A/C Service Technician Senior

Troubleshoots, repairs and/or maintains the air conditioning/heating system in order to control the temperature and humidity in buildings with central air systems. This is done by maintaining air and oil bath filters; electronic and pneumatic controls; adding freon gas to obtain prescribed operating pressure, adding oil; observing pressure and vacuum readings; adjusting controls; setting thermostats, switches, fuses, and electrical controls and overhauling compressors; using volt-ohmmeters, manometers and other tools as well as testing devices of the trade.

Daily inspections of air conditioners, chillers, refrigeration and heating equipment; i.e. motors, compressors, condensing units, evaporators, etc. in order to evaluate the functional operation of the system and make any necessary adjustments. This is done by observing units to detect malfunctions and insure cooling or heating is taking place, checking compressors, air handlers, condensing units, pneumatic controls; examining coolant lines for damage and accumulation of frost; attaching gauges to verify conformance of unit to temperature, pressure, BTU and other specifications by having knowledge of A/C, refrigeration and heating systems and operating specifications and the ability to use testing tools, i.e. volt-meters and gauges. Maintains the chemical treatment in the cooling tower water in order to keep the chemical content at prescribed levels.

Repairs and maintains walk-in coolers, freezers, ice machines, refrigerated drinking fountains and refrigerators in order to keep them in optimal operating conditions. This is done by reading work orders; observing the functioning of components, i.e. control fans, condensers, evaporators and compressors, identifying and replacing defective parts and reassembling the equipment. Installs, replaces and modifies A/C, refrigeration and heating systems in order to bring them into proper operation. This is done by putting motors, compressors, condensing units, evaporators and other components in place following blueprints and design specifications; connecting the equipment to duct work, refrigerant lines and electrical power sources and charging the system with refrigerant.

Minimum Qualifications:

Requires two years of experience in refrigeration-air/conditioning repair work. Education may be substituted for experience as determined relevant by the agency. Requires a valid driver’s license. Must be able to perform strenuous physical labor such as lifting. Must be able to climb ladders and work on scaffolding.

Preferred Qualifications:

Refrigerant Transition and Recovery Certification. Strongly prefer journeyman level or 4 years of refrigeration air conditioning work.
