The Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Virginia is currently seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate to investigate the lung immune and tissue responses to infectious and non-infectious exposures (COPD, ILD, lung transplant, and ARDS/ALI) in the research group of Dr. Y. Michael Shim. This project is a part of two newly funded NIH R01’s and will utilize novel mouse models, adoptive transfer studies, gene expression analysis, flow and mass cytometry, and biospecimen (plasma, PBMCs, and lung) from human subjects. The candidate is expected to perform sophisticated experimental research in the immune regulation of lung injury, recovery and chronic disease development following infectious and non-infectious exposures including cigarette smoke, electronic cigarette, bleomycin, virus, and gram negative rod bacteria. The qualified candidate should have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in Immunology, Virology, Lung Biology or a related field. Candidates are expected to have intensive experiences in small animal procedures, flow cytometry, molecular biology and immune cell purification and culture. Strong time management and communication skills, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team are required.

The incumbent will participate in a multiplicity of relevant lab projects and in writing study reports for the study sponsors, papers, and grant applications and is expected to develop research programs as time permits. The incumbent will also be expected to attend and participate in laboratory meetings and research seminars, as well as work with graduate students, technicians, pulmonary and critical care clinical fellows and collaborators in the laboratories involved in the project.

Job responsibilities include:
Full-time research or scholarship at the University. Preparatory for a full-time academic or research career. Supervised by a senior scholar; and allows the appointee to publish the results of his/her research or scholarship. In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants must have a doctoral degree(s) at time of hire.

Preferred experience:
Demonstrated experience in immunology, molecular and cellular biology, or a related field. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in immunology, molecular biology, cell biology, murine models of disease, and/or human translational research. Preference will be given to candidates with a PhD, or equivalent degree in a relative scientific field of study. Eligibility for NIH post-doctoral fellowship funding is helpful but not mandatory.

Required knowledge, skills, and abilities:
Excellent written and oral communication skills. Proven grant writing skills are also important (e.g., post-doctoral awards and/or submitted PI-level grants). Highly motivated to develop new research avenues. This job involves extensive bench, animal work and use of desktop/laptop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.

Postdoctoral employment is normally limited to an individual who has been awarded a doctoral degree within the previous five years. This is a 12-month appointment with the possibility of renewal (for an additional two, one-year increments) contingent upon satisfactory performance and the availability of funding. Salary will be commensurate with education and experience.
