DEPARTMENTAL INFORMATION

The Engineer in Training position supports projects that improve the public and the development community’s protection from potential flooding and ensures compliance with regulations. The Engineering Division’s Drainage and Bridge Section provides bridge and dam inspection services, drainage criteria manual updates, ordinance updates, and Corp of Engineer permits. 

JOB SUMMARY

This job is located in the Engineering Division of the Public Works Department within the City of Oklahoma City and is under the direction of an immediate supervisor. The primary purpose of this classification is to provide entry-level engineering operations and project management assistance during the completion of City infrastructure construction projects which may include stie reviews. Essential job functions include: performing background research involving the review of construction plans, technical journals, City codes and ordinances, field observations, survey findings, etc. to obtain data required to facilitate project design and plan generation; and computing projected construction costs and writing specifications necessary to solicit bids. This classification has considerable contact with other City employees, contractors, developers, architects, and consulting engineers to obtain or provide information and to explain or clarify City codes and ordinances. The employee may provide technical assistance to drafters and survey teams by delegating and verifying the accuracy of work assignments. Work products are reviewed by a supervisor during the development of projects and upon their completion for accuracy and adherence to deadlines.

JOB REQUIREMENTS 

Knowledge of the principles and practices of civil engineering. Skill in compiling and analyzing technical data. Skill in following geometric, algebraic, trigonometric, and calculus formulas. Skill in verbal and written communication. Ability to apply knowledge of civil engineering to work performed. Ability to design public-works engineering projects. Ability to learn and interpret City codes, ordinances, and standards related to commercial and public construction. Ability to work projects through to completion within specified time frames. Possession of a valid Driver License (Operator). Possession of an Engineering degree from an accredited four (4) year university OR registration as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT).

NOTE: The employee must possess or obtain registration as an Engineer-In-Training (EIT) by the State of Oklahoma within a reasonable amount of time upon assuming the position.

DEPARTMENTAL PREFERENCES

Experience in the review, preparation, and interpretation of civil engineering plans and calculations, final plats and legal descriptions.  Knowledge of FEMA and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers rules and regulations.  Knowledge of paving and drainage design standards and requirements.  Experience with common software packages, including HEC-RAS, HydroCAD, HY-8, Hydraflow, HEC-HMS.

WORKING CONDITIONS 

Inside and outside; exposed to heat, cold, humidity, rain, etc. Subject to working near moving machinery, power tools, and vehicles in motion. Occasionally exposed to intermittent or continued loud and incessant noises caused by machinery or construction equipment. Occasionally exposed to large amounts of dust or other irritants. Subject to varying amounts of noxious odors when inspecting sewer repairs, etc.

Note: Typical City employee working hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. However, working hours vary (may require work to begin before 8:00 a.m. and/or end beyond 5:00 p.m., and/or may require work on weekends and holidays), and are subject to change, based on the duties and location of the position and the business needs of the assigned work unit/department.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS 

Near vision enough to read standard office correspondence, including the fine print found in specification books or the reduced print on copies of maps, plans, etc. Speech and hearing enough to communicate effectively in-person or by telephone.  Manual and finger dexterity enough to operate standard office equipment and to produce hand-written and electronically-generated correspondence. Hearing enough to determine factors such as the location of vehicles and equipment or when equipment is malfunctioning.
