Plumber Foreman

General Statement

Under general supervision, is responsible for all plumbing work involved in the installation, alteration, maintenance and repair of water, waste, sewage and drainage pipes, plumbing fixtures and accessories throughout the District.

Supervises plumbing activities throughout the District; plans and schedules projects; gives advice and instructions regarding work in process; inspects jobs in progress and upon completion to make sure that instructions and work schedules are followed. Supervises the work of Plumber Leadman and Journeymen Plumbers. Cooperates with other supervisory personnel in order to coordinate plumbing activities with other operating and maintenance work. Is responsible for the proper use and care of tools, equipment and materials used in connection with plumbing work. Checks adherence to safety rules and practices, administers first aid in case of injury and secures prompt medical attention when necessary. Studies and interprets blueprints, sketches, written or verbal orders, or other means of direction. Requisitions tools, equipment, supplies, and/or materials from the storeroom.

Other Job Functions

Consults with other District personnel to determine job requirements and schedules. Performs any of the duties of a Plumber as required. Reviews and codes timesheets, electronic time off requests and maintains vacation schedules online. Performs other duties as assigned.

Environmental Conditions

May involve exposure to a variety of operating mechanical equipment and loud noise and/or noxious odors. May include working in all types of weather conditions throughout the plant facility and collection system.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Extensive knowledge of the plumbing trade. Thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade. Skill in the use and care of the tools and equipment of the plumbing trade. Basic computer skills. Ability to work from sketches, blueprints and broken parts. Ability to do oxyacetylene and electric arc welding. Ability to coordinate the work of several crews at different locations. Ability to plan and supervise the work of others in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Graduation from a standard senior high school or the equivalent and two years of experience equivalent to a Plumber Leadman, or three years as a journeyman Plumber. Possession of a valid State of Illinois or City of Chicago Plumber’s license.

Substitution

Additional experience may substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

Promotional Requirement

One year of service with the District as a Plumber Leadman, or two years as a Plumber. Civil service status in one of the foregoing classifications.
