We are seeking applications from suitably qualified and experienced medical practitioners to commence their careers in Psychiatry as a  Stage 1 Psychiatry Registrar  with us at Austin Health. Seven positions are available, fully accredited with the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP) Fellowship Program. The positions will commence on 5 February, 2025.

Austin Health is committed to supporting its registrars through to Fellowship. Each position comes with an initial five-year contract, consistent with the expected length of Fellowship training.

About Psychiatry Training at Austin Health
The Mental Health Division at Austin Health offers registrars a comprehensive training in psychiatry through a broad range of learning experiences, in a supportive and collegiate working environment. Stage 1 registrars undertake rotations in adult psychiatry across inpatient and community contexts, with posts in our Statewide Psychological Trauma Recovery Service also available.

In Stages 2 and 3, registrars can additionally access a range of subspecialty opportunities, including:

Parent-Infant Psychiatry:  inpatient services at Austin Hospital and Northpark Private Hospital, outpatient services at Mercy Hospital for Women; Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry:  including liaison to the statewide and National services for liver transplant, head and spinal injury, epilepsy, toxicology and cancer, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry:  inpatient adolescent and child services, specialty consultation-liaison, emergency and crisis, and several community posts, along with our new Statewide Child and Family Centre Eating Disorders:  with inpatient, outpatient and day program experiences offered; Trauma Care:  statewide Psychological Trauma Recovery Service offers posts providing trauma care for civilians, veterans and active service personnel, through inpatient, outpatient and day programs; Neuropsychiatry:  experiences in inpatient, community and consultation-liaison work, including through the Statewide Brain Disorders Program; Addiction Psychiatry:  with services for community and general hospital inpatients, and broader community consultation through the Hamilton Centre program Psychiatry of Old Age:  rotations are available through the Northern Hospital, Bundoora, Northpark Private Hospital, and The Melbourne Clinic, Richmond; Forensic Psychiatry:  available through secondment to Forensicare; Private Psychiatry:  with rotations available at the Epworth Hospital, Camberwell, The Melbourne Clinic, Richmond, and Northpark Private Hospital, Bundoora. Advanced Training Certificates:  all are accessible, with certificate programs in Child and Adolescent, Consultation-Liaison, Adult, Psychiatry of Old Age and Addiction Psychiatry available locally.

Austin Health trainees can also look forward to a collegiate, inclusive and supportive environment, which values trainee welfare, development and training success. Trainees have access to our weekly Psychiatry Education Program, supported by senior medical staff, and the co-located University of Melbourne Department of Psychiatry. Specific educational programs also exist for junior trainees and for RANZCP examination candidates, as well as opportunities to be involved for research, medical student teaching and service leadership.

To be successful in this role you must:

Have General Registration as an Australian Medical Practitioner with AHPRA Have approval from the Victorian Psychiatry Training Committee (VPTC) to commence RANZCP Fellowship Training. Be committed to a career in Mental Health, backed up with appropriate clinical experience and a record of excellent clinical care; Commitment to professional development, with interest in research and education; Have above-average skills as a communicator and collaborator, with the ability to develop and maintain supportive therapeutic and professional relationships. Recognise and value the diverse knowledge and experience of our consumers and carers.

All prospective Stage 1 Psychiatry Registrars in Victoria must apply to the Victorian Psychiatry Training Committee (VPTC) for entry into the RANZCP Fellowship Program. Applications can be made through the Postgraduate Medical Council of Victoria (PMCV) . Further information regarding the VPTC application process is available .

All appointments are made subject to VPTC approval of candidates' application to the RANZCP Fellowship Program, to the outcome of the PMCV Training Match, and to a satisfactory National Police Check and Working With Children Check.
