Summary

The Street Maintenance Crew Member performs unskilled/semi-skilled work including compacting, installing, leveling and finishing materials; construct and maintain roadways, sidewalks and storm drainage systems; performs heavy manual labor; works with concrete, asphalt, gravel, dirt, bricks, grout, and other materials.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

Reporting Relationship: Reports to Labor Crew Chief Physical Requirements: Sitting Standing Bending Twisting Reaching Kneeling  Squatting  Crawling Climbing (10 ft) Walking (3 miles) Lifting (at least 70 lbs.) Shoveling (10-30 lbs.) Pushing/Pulling  Carrying (3 ft, 20-100 lbs.) Driving approx. 50 miles daily Work outside exposed to all weather conditions, chemicals, fumes, solvents, dust, slippery/uneven surfaces, machinery, moving object/vehicles, and excessive noise. May climb ladders, work on slippery and uneven surfaces, work in confined spaces, and use vibrating machinery or tools. Work in traffic; walk in and around moving vehicles and equipment. Work involves sitting periodically, including riding in vehicle, attending trainings and meetings, or during use of office equipment such as computer for administrative tasks. Sensory Requirements: Touch Hearing Vision (distance, near, and peripheral) Depth perception Color distinction Work Environment: Work shall require shift or irregular hours determined at the discretion of the supervisor. Outdoor environment - working in various weather conditions and in unconditioned warehouse facilities will be required as needed.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Transportation- Knowledge of principles and methods for moving people or goods by road specifically, including laws and ordinances regulating the operation of vehicles.  Construction- Knowledge of materials, methods, tools, and procedures used in the construction and maintenance of streets.  Customer and Personal Service- Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services including customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.  Safety- Knowledge of OSHA, City, and Federal rules and regulations, as well as work hazards and applicable safety precautions of the assigned work.  Communication Skills – Conveying information effectively through speaking and writing and understanding information others give through speaking and writing.  Active Listening – Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions when appropriate, and picking out important pieces of information.  Teamwork skills – Works well with others to accomplish a common goal.  Physical Abilities include but are not limited to: sitting, standing, bending, twisting, reaching, kneeling/squatting, walking, driving, crawling, climbing, lifting and carrying (up to 90lbs), shoveling, pushing, and pulling. Tools, Equipment, and Machines: Rake, shovel, concrete tools, brick laying tools. Work Environment: Extreme Temperatures possible, outdoors; Some physical activity and time spent in heavy machinery

Preferred Qualification

Computer experience preferred; including but not limited to typing, word documents, spreadsheets, and work order management system.

Minimum Qualifications

Must have a valid driver's license at the time of hire. Must have ability to obtain a City Driving permit at time of hire. Must be 18 or turning 18 on or before June 13, 2024. Must have graduated, or will be graduating from high school in summer of 2024, and received a high school diploma. Must be able to pass a reference check, background check, medical physical, and drug test.

Conditions of Employment

The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. The type of information that will be collected as part of a background check includes, but is not limited to: reference checks, social security verification, education verification, criminal conviction record check, and, if applicable, a credit history check, sex offender registry and motor vehicle records check.

Background checks must be in compliance with all federal and state statutes, such as the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). The checks must be consistent with the guidelines set forth by these laws requiring organizations to obtain a candidate’s written authorization before obtaining a criminal background report, motor vehicle records check or credit report; and to properly store and dispose of information derived from such reports.

Final candidates must pass a pre-employment drug-screening test and physical examination. During the selection process, candidates may be asked to take a skills test, and/or participate in other assessments.
