Multiple, successful applicants in this recruitment, may be placed in a pool and moved into temporary openings as needed. If a permanent position becomes available within six months of interview selection, applicant may be moved into the position permanently.

JOB OVERVIEW This position is responsible for the overall safety and security of Montana Department of Corrections Transportation department. The Lieutenant helps ensure the transportation department is operated for the safety of the public, as well as the incarceration, treatment, and rehabilitation of the inmate population through supervising transportation staff and performing administrative duties.

Manage correctional officers and subordinate correctional supervisors. Maintain knowledge of, comply with, and enforce all institutional policies, rules, procedures, and regulations. Monitor behavior of subordinates to ensure alert, courteous, and professional behavior toward inmates, parolees, fellow employees, visitors, and the public. Complete administrative paperwork or supervise the preparation or maintenance of records, forms, or reports. Supervise activities, such as searches, shakedowns, inspections, or tours. May set up or modify work schedules or assignments.

The hourly rate of this position will increase by $1.50 per hour or 4% whichever is greater starting July 1, 2024, in accordance with HB13.

This position will primarily be based out of Montana State Prison in Deer Lodge, Montana.

PUBLIC SAFETY OFFICER INFORMATION

This position requires POST Basic Certification after attending training at the Montana Law Enforcement Academy and successfully completing one year of employment with the Department of Corrections. In addition to the training and experience requirements, to be POST Certified, the successful candidate(s) must:

Be a citizen of the United States of America; Be at least 18 years of age; Be fingerprinted for a criminal history search; Not have been convicted of a crime for which s/he could have been imprisoned in a federal or state penitentiary; Be of good moral character, as determined by a thorough background screen; Be a high school graduate or issued a GED or its equivalent; AND, Possess or be eligible for a valid Montana driver’s license.

Tobacco Free - Use of all tobacco products, including smokeless tobacco products and tobacco substitutes in Department of Corrections buildings, is prohibited. In secure care facilities possession of tobacco products is also prohibited.

QUALIFICATIONS

Associate degree in criminal justice is required (Experience may be substituted for education at the rate of two years’ experience to one year education) OR Four years in a uniformed security position: correctional officer, sergeant, law enforcement, etc. Law enforcement / Corrections experience is preferred. Two years supervisory experience required which may be included in prior stated experience requirement.  Basic POST Certification is required, Intermediate POST obtained within one year.
