Police Services Officer

DEFINITION
Under general supervision, to perform a variety of non-sworn law enforcement duties in support of the Police Department including in the areas of jail custody, police records, and administrative service tasks and responsibilities.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES Jail Custody
Receives, books, and cares for the safety of prisoners housed in the Hermosa Beach Police Department jail facility including responsibility for daily conduct and quality of jail facility
Assists personnel when searching prisoners, completes booking process, warrant checks, and all related paperwork necessary and/or required by law
Conducts regular and routines jail inspections at prescribed intervals, according to policy and procedures, assuring the safety and welfare of incarcerated persons
Oversee inmate visitations
Prepares and serves approved prepared meals to prisoners and maintains custody and control of prisoners during transfers from one area to another
Receives and transfers telephone calls and messages, maintains radio contact with assigned personnel
Receives complaints, answers inquiries, receives and writes reports, takes bail and bond
Performs other duties as assigned
Police Records
Receives and routes routine and emergency calls for services
Conducts business with the public via the transfer of information
Maintains records and files according to procedures and as required by law
Operates data input and retrieval terminal
Compiles criminal statistics and information
Facilitates the processing of records and related data and information
Receives and logs emergency and other types of messages
Notifies and keeps supervisors informed as to emergency situations and general activities
Performs miscellaneous clerical work in maintenance of logs, records, forms, and operations
Implements and modifies laserfiche program to accommodate the department's specific record-keeping needs
Performs other duties as assigned
Administrative Support Services
Maintains supplies necessary for the ongoing and efficient daily operation of facility
Processes a variety and memos
Attends meetings as required
Processes mail, faxes, and money collected
Fingerprints city applicants for background investigation
Performs other duties as assigned
Knowledge of:
Basic law enforcement principles and practices and their application to a wide variety of non-sworn services, operations, and programs
Principles and procedures of record keeping including proper procedures for the maintenance of logs and reports
Principles and procedures of record keeping and filing
Methods and techniques of proper phone etiquette
Customer service techniques, practices, and principals
Strong organizational skills
Police records systems
Ability to:
Perform a variety of non-sworn law enforcement duties including those related to jail custody, police records, and administrative services
Deal tactfully and effectively with law enforcement personnel, with the public, and prisoners
Speak clearly an concisely; remember names, numbers, an details of incidents
Study and retain knowledge of department policies, procedures, rules and regulations
Recall location of streets and city geography in general
Familiarity and knowledge of standard data input terminal keyboard
Operate office equipment including computers and supporting word processing and spreadsheet applications
Type or enter data at a speed necessary for successful job performance
Respond tactfully, clearly, concisely, and appropriately to inquires related to area of responsibility
Understand and follow written and verbal instructions
Provide excellent professional customer service
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others
Education and Experience: Any combination of training and experience which would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain this required knowledge would be:
Educational achievement equivalent to graduation from high school. Must be 18 years of age. Must complete basic jail operations course within the one year probationary period.
Licenses/Certificates: Possession of a valid Class C California Driver’s License with a safe driving record is required and must be maintained as valid during the course of employment.

Environment: Work is performed in an office and jail environment; extensive public contact and exposure to irate and abusive individuals; work and/or walk on various types of surfaces including slippery or uneven surfaces; incumbents required to work various 12 hour shifts. Regular contact with the general public.
Physical: Primary functions required sufficient physical ability to walk, stand, or sit for prolonged periods of time; occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; regularly push, pull, lift, and/or carry light to moderate weights; operate law enforcement and general office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; ability to speak and hear to exchange information; ability to operate a vehicle to travel to various locations.
Vision: See in the normal visual range with or without correction.
Hearing: Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.
