Job Description

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Analyst, Fundamentals and Trading Analytics reports directly to the Manager of Fundamentals and Trading Analytics within Cheniere's Gas Supply and Trading team located in Houston. This role is responsible for developing and maintaining fundamental models and analysis that inform both the long and short-term views of the Gas Supply and Trading group. As an analyst on the fundamentals team, the analyst will focus on the Texas power market, with particular emphasis on ERCOT, as well as the natural gas markets most relevant to the group. Responsibilities will include data acquisition, model building and maintenance, communication of key fundamentals viewpoints to various audiences, and ad hoc requests from the Trading, Transport and Storage, and Gas Supply teams, as well as senior management.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive ERCOT power market view that should include but is not limited to supply & demand trends, regional South Zone dynamics, short-term markets (ERCOT real-time, day-ahead, intramonth), Ancillary Services, forward power markets (both fixed prices & heat rates), and PUCT regulatory environment.
  • Analyze and communicate the key drivers of US gas market fundamentals, including production trends, power burn economics, and infrastructure impacts, among other items.
  • Develop and maintain fundamental frameworks and models that contribute to the Supply & Trading team's short and long-term trading and supply decisions.
  • Analyze and communicate the key drivers of US and ERCOT power market fundamentals, including demand trends, power stack economics, and regulatory impacts, among other items.
  • Prepare presentations that articulate the Gas Supply & Trading group's forward strategies and results achieved to reach a broad audience, including Cheniere senior management, Board of Directors, and various external customers.
  • Support the fundamentals group's ongoing key activities, including generating daily, weekly, and monthly outlooks on US gas and power markets, with a focus on ERCOT, particularly the South Zone.
  • Learn the key drivers of the Supply & Trading group's profitability with the goal of identifying fundamental shifts, both short and long-term, that will impact group performance.
  • Anticipate emerging needs for new fundamental models and frameworks, so that the Supply & Trading team is properly positioned around developing events in the market.
  • Develop and expand internal tools to enhance existing analysis.
  • Track maintenance, new infrastructure, and regulation that has the potential to impact prices at key locations.
  • Support the power and gas traders with profit and loss reporting, including developing new tools.
  • Develop an in-depth understanding of the Supply & Trading team's daily, monthly, seasonal, and term supply positions.
  • Work with members of the Transport and Storage team to anticipate fundamentals that may impact key long-term decisions regarding infrastructure.
  • Coordinate with other fundamental and strategy groups within Cheniere as needed.
  • Attend industry events and conferences to develop and nurture good business relationships.
  • Respond to various ad hoc requests.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

Knowledge:
  • The candidate would ideally have experience in fundamental analysis of US natural gas and power markets, with some exposure to ERCOT. However, prior experience in a trading, risk, or research role in natural gas, commodities, or other financial markets is also desirable. Additional qualifications include experience applying economic analysis to trading decisions and strong technical skills.
  • Must have advanced computer knowledge in MS Office (Excel, Word, and Power Point), and the ability to learn new software or applications.

Skills:
  • Demonstrated ability with qualitative and quantitative analysis of global and domestic commodity markets.
  • Previous experience in power market analysis, particularly ERCOT, is preferred.
  • Highly proficient in MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, and Bloomberg.
  • Experience using data integration software such as Power BI, Tableau, Spotfire and/or SQL.
  • Programming experience with Visual Basic, Python, R or other relevant programming languages preferred.
  • Experience building models and frameworks used to evaluate key business or trading decisions.
  • Excellent analytical skills, self-motivated, and capable of independent achievement.
  • Excellent presentation, written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work at all levels of the organization.
  • Business focused, flexible and able to demonstrate teamwork.
  • Proven ability to proactively develop strong internal and external relationships.
  • Willing to undertake short duration business travel as required.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Education and Certifications: Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Engineering, Data Science, Economics, Accounting or relative work experience. Advanced degree and / or certification preferred.

Experience: Experience in natural gas analysis, commodities trading, risk, or finance with applicable analysis responsibilities.
  • Analyst - minimum of one (1) year of experience
  • Senior Analyst - minimum of three (3) years of experience
