About the program

The Self Sufficiency Offices help with food benefits (SNAP), cash for families (TANF), childcare assistance (ERDC), medical, refugee services, and domestic violence services.

Self-Sufficiency Programs Mission:

To provide a safety net, family stability and a connection to careers that guide Oregonians out of poverty.

Summary of Duties:

As a Benefit & Eligibility Worker, you will play a critical role in providing a safety net that supports better outcomes for Oregonians. You will provide resources that support family stability and will also assist in connecting Oregonians to careers. You will determine eligibility for people applying to various Self-Sufficiency Programs through interviewing, gathering and assessing information.

Minimum qualifications

  • Two years of experience determining eligibility for an agency program by interviewing to assess the needs of clients, and interpreting and applying the policies, rules, and guidelines that are applicable to the client's situation.
  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience relative to the class concept.

  • Experience meeting or exceeding accuracy and attention to detail. The ability to accurately and successfully complete assigned tasks, meet outcomes and follow up on necessary actions.
  • Experience providing customer service. Ability to provide customer service to a high volume of diverse customers in a manner that demonstrates active listening, compassion and a trauma-informed lens.

  • Customer engagement experience. Ability to respectfully and professionally elicit information from clients in interviewing situations where the client may be feeling extremely emotional.

  • Strong organizational skills. Experience remaining organized, using effective time management skills to prioritize tasks and responsibilities appropriately in a fast-paced, high productivity environment.

Working conditions

  • This is a permanent, full-time position and is represented by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU).  
  • The ongoing work schedule is M-F, 8:00am-5:00pm
  • Contact with the public, including contact with Oregonians experiencing emotional and financial stress.
  • Serve a diverse range of customers with compassion and professionalism through a trauma informed lens.
  • Will require sitting at a computer or telephone for prolonged periods of the workday, often work stations available to accommodate sitting and standing, but not always.
  • Experience high volume of computer work, using various computer programs in a fast-paced environment.
  • Priorities, processes and procedures may change daily and require the ability to be very flexible in application of procedures. 
  • May require a valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record or other acceptable method of transportation.

Background checks and requirements

  • Finalists for this position will be subject to a computerized criminal history and abuse check.  Adverse background information will be reviewed and could result in withdrawal of a conditional job offer or termination of employment.
  • The Oregon Department of Human Services does not offer visa sponsorship. Within three days of hire, you will be required to complete the US Department of Homeland Security’s I-9 form confirming authorization to work in the United States.
