About Us

Our Ethnic Minority and Traveller Achievement Service (EMTAS) is part of the Education and Skills Service within WSCC. Our EMTAS team works with schools to deliver the best support possible for pupils from minority ethnic backgrounds, including Gypsy Roma Traveller (GRT) & Showman pupils and those with English as an Additional Language (EAL).

As part of EMTAS, we offer advice, guidance and support for children, parents, and community engagement. EMTAS also offers training for school staff, and works with families to overcome barriers to education, giving advice on the English education system and the importance of continuing the home language.

The Opportunity

Salary: Soulbury 4-6£44,545 to £47,170 per annum

Contract Type: Fixed Term/Secondment until 31 July 2025

Working Pattern: 37 hours per week, full time

Location: Crawley (plus Crawley Weighting Allowance £561 per annum) / Countywide

Please note: You must be able to travel throughout the County including to locations that are not always accessible by public transport.

WSCC have an exciting opportunity to join our small and welcoming Ethnic Minority and Traveller Achievement Service as an Advisory Teacher.

By collaboratively working with colleagues in the EMTAS team and the wider Inclusion service, you will provide specialist advice, guidance and practical strategies for pupils, their families, schools, education settings and agencies. Key to this role is creating innovative solutions to inclusion, removing barriers, and tackling inequalities in learning.

You will share your knowledge and provide training to help raise attainment and provide the best education possible for children and young people from minority ethnic backgrounds, including Traveller children and those learning through English as an Additional Language (EAL). An understanding of families arriving in the UK is beneficial.

We are looking for someone who can communicate in a professional manner, with an element of creativity to develop and shape this role. You will have the opportunity to look at new ways of working across your team. It is essential you hold a Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

About You

Key Skills:

Ability to make sound pragmatic problem-solving decisions which will have a wider service impact. The ability to provide comprehensive professional advice, analysis and make judgements to resolve difficult problems of a technical, professional, or people-related nature. Ability to develop and maintain collaborative working relationships and excellent partnership working with leaders, managers, practitioners, and other agencies to deliver objectives. Excellent inclusive practice and teaching skills. Commitment to continuous professional development and an understanding of the value of developing skills and expertise within a specialist area to improve outcomes for children and young people. Ability to forward plan, set timescales and meet challenging targets and objectives, taking appropriate action where these are not being met. Effective evaluation and analytical skills to monitor and review effectiveness of provision, teaching and learning. Ability to challenge existing practices and ways of working. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills (verbal and written) with the ability to successfully influence and negotiate effective outcomes, demonstrated through the development and delivery of a range of strategies for practitioners to adopt to improve outcomes.

Qualifications and/or experience:

Educated to degree level and with QTS. Knowledge and experience of working in school environments, including experience of closing the performance gap for vulnerable pupils. Outstanding knowledge of inclusive practices. An openness and awareness of a variety of teaching approaches and strategies and an ability to support all children to successfully access learning. Experience of taking initiative to identify innovative solutions to improve learning outcomes for children and young people. Knowledge and understating of the wider legislative frameworks relating to Children’s Services. Sound and accurate IT knowledge to enhance teaching and learning and effectively monitor service delivery.
