Job Overview

Performs duties and/or supervisor duties in the installation, alteration, maintenance, and repair of complex commercial and industrial electrical systems, equipment, and fixtures. Detects difficult and complex causes of electrical failures in equipment and wiring; maintains and repairs variable frequency electrical motor drives; maintains and repairs generators, switchgear, transformers, motors, relays, switches, fixtures, high and low voltage feeder circuits and cables, and various other electrical equipment and electronic devices. Interprets and prepares technical sketches for various electrical systems; insures compliance with electrical codes; performs calculations for electrical layouts and installations.

Duties and Responsibilities

Note: The following duties are illustrative and not exhaustive. Depending on assigned area of responsibility, incumbents in the position may perform one or more of the activities described below.

Supervises or participates in the more difficult installation, alteration, repair and maintenance of commercial and industrial electrical systems, motors, generators, fixtures, appliances, and mechanical equipment. Supervises the work of subordinate staff by scheduling, assigning and reviewing work, providing training and counseling, and evaluating performance to subordinates. Maintains and alters electrical systems. Checks the performance of electrical work on photoelectric cells, air conditioners, emergency generator units, air compressors, lighting controls and other related electrical devices. Schedules and performs preventative maintenance to the facilities electrical systems and components. Troubleshoots electrical related issues. Locates and corrects power failures and short circuits using volt/ohm meter, infrared camera, and other related equipment. Estimates, plans, executes, and supervises the electrical wiring and fixture installation on construction projects. Makes emergency repairs to elevators, generators, and other electrical apparatus, appliances and equipment. Schedules, coordinates, and oversees contracted services.  Maintains and tracks inventory valued up to $10,000.00 Uses a computerized management system to keep records of operating conditions and repairs to mechanical equipment. Drives a motor vehicle to and from work sites; loads and unloads tools and equipment. Cleans work site upon work completion. Performs other related duties as required.

Job Specifications

Knowledge of the principles of electricity. Knowledge of the functions and operations of electrical equipment. Knowledge of the materials and tools used in the maintenance and repair of electrical equipment. Knowledge of electrical industry standards. Knowledge of National Electrical Code. Knowledge of Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). Skill in the use and care of electrical testing, diagnostic and repair equipment. Skill in the application of supervisory techniques. Ability to follow established procedures and/or create upon the requirement. Ability to prioritize work. Ability to work effectively with others. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to plan, organize, supervise, and evaluate the work/performance of others. Ability to distinguish differences in wire and cable colors. Ability and willingness to be in an on-call status and respond to call outs, working non-standard duty hours and rotating shifts that include nights, weekends and holidays.  Ability to read and understand electrical drawings and diagrams. Ability to operate basic computer functions (email, digital time card, data entry, and . Ability to coordinate contracted work. Ability to operate a standard motor vehicle safely.

Physical Requirements

Work in confined spaces, on ladders, scaffolding, towers and lift buckets up to a considerable height.

Work Category

Medium Work - Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Minimum Qualifications Required

Graduation from high school or possession of a GED certificate; AND Four years of experience as an electrician to include one year as a lead worker; AND Successful completion of a training program in Commercial or Industrial Electricity from a Vocational/Technical school;

OR

An equivalent combination of education, training and experience that would reasonably be expected to provide the job-related competencies noted above; AND Possession of a valid Florida Driver’s License.

Emergency Management Responsibilities

In the event of an emergency or disaster, an employee may be required to respond promptly to duties and responsibilities as assigned by the employee’s department, the County’s Office of Emergency Management, or County Administration. Such assignments may be for before, during or after the emergency/disaster.

Career Progression

Employees in this classification that acquire the competencies and minimum qualifications for the next tier will be able to apply for promotional opportunities through a competitive selection process. Employees will not automatically be upgraded to the next tier.
