Job summary

As the Mechanical Engineering Service Manager, you will�have responsibility for managing and monitoring all aspects of our fast paced and flexible service provision for Forestry England.

Working closely with your admin support staff at one of our workshop locations, you will ensure all assets under your remit are inspected, serviced, and repaired to a high quality, utilising both internal resource and establishing links with key external suppliers across your geographical areas of responsibility. You will mentor and develop the team to ensure the support we provide is of high standard and in accordance with the organisations vision.

Forging close links with both our internal and external partners is an equally important part of the role,�and so enhanced interpersonal communication skills are key to succeeding in this role.

The role will be location based and you will be expected to work flexibly as part of a multi-disciplinary team, providing a wide range of specific technical duties and work collaboratively with colleagues who are based at different sites. To support this, some infrequent travel may be required for meetings or training requirements.

The workshop at Bellingham is one of three workshop cost centres in England. Mechanical Engineering provide a safe and economic repair service for all the vehicles, machinery and equipment (VME) used by the Forestry England in the delivery of its national objectives.

The post will be based at Bellingham Workshop and occasional travel to other Forest Districts may be required with the possibility of an overnight stay. The post-holder will report to the Bellingham Workshop Manager and will supervise as part of a team of 4 staff within the workshop.

To organise and supervise the effective repair and servicing of Forestry England�s vehicles, machinery and equipment (VME) and provide commercial services to internal customers.

Job description

To provide an efficient value for money service to help Forestry England to achieve its objectives by maintaining and repairing vehicles, forestry, civil engineering and mechanical equipment. while ensuring that the fleet is professionally and cost effectively maintained to maximise availability.

To supervise and arrange all maintenance and repair work done both at the workshop and by outside.

Person specification

� Assess individual job and take appropriate action to ensure safe and cost-effective rectification.
� To communicate and liaise with others on all repairs and workshop related issues.
� Management of Mechanics to ensure that all are sufficiently skilled and trained for assigned tasks.
� Ensure that the working environment is appropriate and safe for the operation being carried out.
� Support Forestry England's operations of vehicles, machines and equipment.
� Ensure your team have a robust system in place so that all FC numbered items of VME must have as a minimum a recorded 12 monthly inspection to ensure it meets all relevant safety and service requirements. This needs to be formally reviewed with the Workshop Manager at least every four months.
� You will need to have good communication skills written and verbal with members of the workshop staff while ascertaining problems in the field Communicate with the Forest District Staff and Machine operators while keeping Workshop Manager and District informed of progress.
� Apply Forestry England's financial controls to transactions.
� Programme daily work schedules for mechanical staff appropriate to each member of staffs training and experience of VME.
� Generate Risk Assessments for Workshop repairs and give instructions on the FISA guides. Ensure the Health & Safety Policy is complied with. Carry out inspections on completed RA at the end of every month.
� Carry out PMS meetings and prepare PMS reports on staff.
� Help out in the Workshop during times of high demand for repairs.

Essential:

A recognised technical qualification such as NVQ, SVQ to minimum level 1 and/or significant relevant experienceRecognised time served experience in an engineering, fleet or motor industry role.Demonstrable experience and qualification of working in a customer and technical engineering focused environment.A sound understanding of legislative and regulatory inspection and testing compliance in an engineering setting.A sound working knowledge of Microsoft Office packages � in particular Word, Excel and Outlook.Approachable and customer focused.Experience of financial business and budgetsExperience of carrying out maintenance and repair work on a wide range of different types of vehicles, machinery and equipment.Experience of working in a similar role.Good communication skills.Experience of working in a small team.

Desirable:

Knowledge and understanding of mechanical, engineering. Electronic and hydraulic systems found on heavy plant and machinery and agricultural equipment.�Knowledge of how a workshop runs in particular with Stores, Repairs, Legal Obligations, LOLER, PUWER and Health and Safety.Experience in Managing Staff.Knowledge and use of fleet management software, including asset records.
